Ok, so I have yet to see any episodes, but judging from just reading the outline I'm not seeing how this show isn't just a straight up ripoff...?

It is a different take on the same idea. There are less rules, it is rather open banter. I found it generally to be less lethargic and avoiding the moments where nothing is happening.
