What was the logic behind Mount Rushmore?

The President commissioned Mount Rushmore to conceal landmarks from the map to hinder finding the city of gold. However, it didn't slow down Gates at all, nor were any landmarks even mentioned except a hidden eagle with no place to start looking. So what was the purpose of Mount Rushmore?

Them wanting to hide the city of good makes even less sense.

Are you sure that's what the movie said? I'll have to watch it again, I guess, but that makes no sense to me: the landmarks were still there, and they found the city. If the authorities had actually known about the city, I doubt it would have still been there for Ben to find.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

The land marks could have been on the rock that got chiseled away to make the faces.
So when it was done, those landmarks were gone.
Land marks are meant to be seen from afar, so unless people looking for the treasure knew it was there, noone could have found it. Because they would have had to been on the rock
