Cinema Italian Style Film Festival in Los Angeles

This film just premiered last night and I must say I was rather blown away. For the first time in a long time, Italy has a filmmaker with a future who can escape the expectations of Fellini, De Sica and Antonioni. Crialese has an original, humorous and didactic form of storytelling that is wonderful to watch.

In his quick speech before the film was shown he said the film should be observed as a "trip" and by his own judgement, Nuovomondo (The Golden Door) is a very physical film that should be felt along the way. He definately put a lot of love into the making of this movie and it was certainly worth the effort.

Now we'll just see how he builds of the assured success of this film. Stay true Emanuele Crialese!

As for the film itself, it certianly had its weak moments that weren't really relevant to the plot, and could have been scrapped...but as a whole, the editing was right on and the soundtrack was a delight. Spot on acting by all involved and the historical setting was very believable. Bravo signore, bravo.

I was there too... I really didn't like it, I felt like there were too many lead ins that you kept me focused on parts of the story that were never really addressed sufficiently (the brother, his dead wife, her past etc...).

I really liked the surreal imagery & the way a few of the scenes were shot... but I don't know, it wasn't really all that in my opinion.

Never trust a movie review from someone that uses the term "wasn't really all that". Then again, maybe Ebert and Roeper can change their "Thumbs Up" to "All That" and "Not All That". I'm sooo sure...

I was also at the Egyptian screening and I thought the film was riveting, cinematography astonishing, the ship's parting shot was worth the price of admission. Bravo Maestro!!!
