Rejected for the Oscars !!!

I've read this morning that Nuovomondo, Special Silver Lion in Venice 2006, has already been rejected by the Oscars commission and didn't passed either the early selections to reach the official disclosure next 23rd january.

Every sign (advertisements, buzz, gossips, bla bla bla) says it's Almòdovar the already written winner with his Volver (a mediocre movie, such overrated !!), so even if nominated it wouldn't have won anyway. Little hopes for Labirinto del Fauno or Iwo Jima (even though are extremely better dutch Black Book or german Life of the Others)

Oscars selector should learn to be a bit more coherent. The nomination ain't a "CONCESSION" given "because it's 4 or 6 years since the last nomination, so it's the year to give it", but should base on unbiassed criteria of quality. It's happened to "La Bestia nel cuore". After Benigni's Oscars Italy hadn't nominations for 7 years even though its submitted films were superb (one for all: Io non ho paura - REJECTED !!!). 2006 was the right time to "gift" a nomination to Italy, no matter what movie was. American critics hated "Don't Tell", so they understood to have done a wrong thing exposing Italy to the international spotlights (La bestia nel cuore wasn't bad, but between all the titles submitted after La Vita è bella, that was the worst). So how many years should we wait until they'll say "is it the right year to grant a nomination to Italy ?". Furthermore, this is the year of Morricone's career Oscar, so a nomination for best foreign film too would have been "scandalous".

I hope that my outlet is science-fiction instead of reality, but I'm not sure...

Anyway Nuovomondo was a masterpiece and doesn't need an Academy Award to say it.

Excluding Volver by the 5 best foreign language movies seems they've recanted the high consideration given for months to Volver, because it's very difficult Helen Mirren will take a blow from Penelope Cruz.

For the foreing lang. cat. it's clear that they want Il Labirinto del Fauno - a mediocre, opulent and historically inaccurate movie

Labirinto was the most over rated film, since, the last one :)
1 or 2 interesting images does not make a great film, does it?

I agree!!! HIGHLY OVERRATED! But then what isn't these days?

Talking about overrated movies...

well, NuovoMondo is one of them!

Too much manierism, exotic locations (remember Tornatore and Salvatores? That is what foreigners want to see about Italy: sea, sun, oldfashioned moods), just a slow movie ready to be exported abroad (the French love to see rural italian people with compassion!)

reply

'Too much...Exotic locations'(sic), where were these in the film, oh the river of milk, of course. That was a dream you fool. I have no idea what 'manierism' is, maybe you could explain, actually don't bother, I doubt you have the intellect. "Remember Tornatore", of course he made a wonderful, if somewhat sentimental film about cinema and humanity, two things you seem to know nothing about. Now go get your spell check.

reply, you fool. English is not your first language, is it? Too bad that couldn't hide your incoherent opinions, that make you seem like you were watching some other film.
"I am SO Italian. It irks me when somebody use cliché of my land! I am ape."
You meant mannerism, right? That doesn't work in Italian or French, smarty pants. You meant AFFECTED, right. Yes, it was a film, full of affectations, but just like everything remembers, harks back to, something else, it still had a freshness and originality . . . and I have seen hundreds of good films and only in the last year or two. This film was a fantastic surprise that kept opening up, more and more, the people becoming more beautiful as their horror deepened. AND incredibly funny. And many other fine things I could mention.

reply

Agreed. Volver was Almodovar's least interesting film, I feel.
But why did you begin by caring about the Oscars, and imagining that they don't use the most lame, self perpetuating, lack of good taste, criteria?
