For those who would like to know more about the Ellis Island experience

There is a book and a documentary called "Island of Hope, Island of Tears'. Ellis Island was indeed those things. Those who didn't pass the tests were sent back to their countries of origin. The poorest of them had sold all they had to come here. There was nothing to go back to.
Papa had told us about his journey, but this film really brought it to life.
The immigrant story was in many ways one of tears. Many like my father never saw their families in the Old Country again. I have letters from his father and brother telling him of his mother's last illness and begging him from her to come home and see her one last time. My father was a laborer. There was never money to go back. I worked with a young man from Kenya who had the same sorrowful experience.
For anyone who would like to honor an immigrant ancestor, Ellis Island has a website where for a donation, one can have an immigrant ancestor memorialzed on the Wall of Honor there. I had my father honored in this way years ago.
By the way, anyone who would like to research an immigrant ancestor who immigrated through Ellis Island can go to ellisislandrecords.org and type the ancestor's name in the search box. It helps if you know the name of the ship and date of entry, but it is not completely necessary. The search is free.
