Is there supposed to be a specific American Idol contestant that Mandy Moore portrays in the movie or does the character of Sally simply parody the types of girls that generally go on American Idol and other similar reality shows?

shareJudging by the songs they made her sing, along with her hair, makeup etc, I'd agree that she was probably the Carrie Underwood of the film. I would've said that some of the others had traits reminding me of Clay Aiken, Bo Bice, and Britain's The X Factor's Chico.

I was thinking more of Kelly Pickler. Both worked as a waitress and had an absentee father. However, I think the movie was made before Pickler was on American Idol. Maybe Pickler got some tips from Kandoo.

Interesting how no one is suggesting Kelly Clarkson... I guess she just seems more genuine that Underwood and Pickler.

She was an amalgamation of sweet, pretty, country girls that go on American Idol...except she knew how to play the game.
She wasn't anyone in particular.
She definitely wasn't dumb. Nor was she a sweet country girl. She was the stereotype (as all the characters were) of the overly ambituous girls who will do anything to win, appeal to the american audience and get the hell out of their little towns.
APWindows-They weren't trying to say that she was different than these girls because she knew how to play the game but rather that most of the AI contestants ARE playing the game. The human interest stories they portray are mostly about ratings and getting votes. In the movie the contestants they picked were not the best-they were the ones that had the appeal to the audience because of the BS stories they put out there. I think that's what makes it a satire.
I thought Mandy Moore's character was like Tracy Flick meets American Idol.
