WHY on God's Earth do some ppl regard this as a good movie??

I know it takes all kinds to make up this world but why was this movie even made????!!

The script sucked. Even the relatively well known Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Hugh Grant and Willem Dafoe looked like complete duds. I mean who can do anything with a script of such poor quality?

Hugh Grant looked bored. I'm sorry were we supposed to feel sorry for you? Mandy Moore - Sally whatever. I'm sorry were we supposed to care?

The tone of the film was so bizarre. It was desperately trying to straddle satire and comedy and maybe a bit of something real but came off as confused and choppy in its editing. I mean if they wanted satire they should have pushed it much further and had fun with the visual style. The style was sooooooo flat.

The ending was stupid as sh**. Yeah ok some guy blows himself up over a worthless girl and that skank presents the next show. there would be serious investigations before another show started or whatever. I mean this cheap, artificial show is supposed to give meaning to the central character Omer??? Good god, please! What else you going to feed us?

These kinda films cheapen the whole industry. Waste of time and money for everyone involved. The only saving grace was Iqbal. Genius.

I'm sorry were there messages in there about America and the Middle East? *splutter* Next time, if you do want it in the fabric of the film, make it worth something, give it actual meat and momentum and allow the film to give it the right forum. Not another 'blow up' story.

You are absolutely correct, I can't stand the people who are gushing "OMG, this movie is brilliant satire!! It's so topical!!" Shut up, the only movie worse than this was Remember the Spartans.

It was horrible, just horrible. But driving fast behind the ambulance was fantastic.

I want to kill that character Sally. What a bitch.

I love this film.

The movie American Dreamz is underrated, in my opinion, because it shows fresh comedy that is used to parody a lifestyle that is looked past by many people. In that I mean there are elements on screen here that are truly comical and masterfully put across, yet many folks are unaware that this movie, which basically came out at the right time to show stuff that "AI wonder boys/girls" hit the scene to give us each year. Because of the strong similarity, this seems truly based, in part, around the lives of those would-be stars from that show, who are now constantly put out in front of our faces since around near into the new millennium.

Such bull -- how they don't even quite last to even be one-hit wonders, while we're apparently to take it they're still somehow supposed to be idols (smh).

American Dreamz was mind-numbingly boring and as a satire it was as far from witty and amusing. I agree that this movie was "flat". There was nothing to draw your attention as if you were encouraged to zone out and in addition the actors look lost.

This is a very good movie. Mandy Moore's character is a true representation of all the sentimentalism *beep* we hear every day from all the reality shows. Hugh grant is also a true picture of the Tv/Movie typical producer. This movie is a satyre of what people view as the american dream, breaking quite a lot of taboos, with parodies of many movies, TV shows but also very funny references to the Bush/Rove couple/history. Of course it is not the best movie ever made but you spend a very good time watching it.
Amongst the people who commented on this, I wonder whether any non-american has a negative view...

The movie was brilliant. As an American, I get so frustrated with how my fellow citizens follow American Idol more than what's going on in Washington.
I thought Dafoe was hilarious as the puppeteer of Quaid's Bush-esque President.

I HATE American Idol. haha. I thought this movie is so close to reality, it is almost sad. We really can't take society that seriously when things are so ridiculous.

For us fans: think on the bright side, the dvd is hecka cheap and you can get it at Big Lots for 4 bucks. The reviews may be poor in some cases, but who cares? I don't mind enjoying a cult comedy. I do think it deserves at least a 6 on imdb, but whatever. Some people don't like satires, and they would rather watch a horribly boring film like The Hours or a stupid action movie like Transformers.

If you are Anti-American: Admit you are doing it just to be cool. Does it feel good to hate?

because God made people different...thus different people have different movie taste/humour

I absolutely agree with you. This is one of the sulkiest movie I've watched in my entire life time. It's so damn boring and I think a high school child would be able to write a better ending. I even hate the character of sally. I didnt even know what to feel for her. In other words the movie is a crap

Ugh.

I so went into this movie with high hopes. It could've been five million times better if they had seriously cut out the bomb sh*t. Just leave it to making fun of American Idol and whatnot. Make it more competitive.

I agree that Hugh Grant seemed bored. *I* was bored. I love Mandy Moore, I do, I think almost everything she does is fun, good, cute, or all of the above. But this? What a freaking let down. I'm so glad this movie was only four dollars at Wal Mart. Aha. But that should've told me a lot.

It's almost like they were trying to mix two movies into one. I don't think I even cracked a smile. With all the good actors, you would think this would've been so much better. But it was so weak. I can't believe it has the 5+ rating it does on here.

Because we screw boys like whores on tequila.

I love this movie.
It's so preposterous in so many ways that it's a total riot. I don't care if it's unintelligent and stupid, the fact is, it's SUPPOSED to be dumb. The characters aren't supposed to be likable. It's SUPPOSED to be a ridiculous and over-the-top movie. If you're expecting anything more, that's stupid. Take it for what it is and stop being a brat because it isn't intellectual enough for you.

Eh, i think it was actually trying to pass itself as a witty, topical satire...

It wasn't INTENDED to be unintelligent and stupid. It just turned out that way.

Yes i agree..was very funny..ripped a hole in mainstream (so called) entertainment as well as a political system that costs billions and yet chooses their leader based on the lowest common denominator and not on talent.

Hugh Grant's character WAS bored. Sally's character was soooo one-dimensional you weren't supposed to care for her. THAT was the point of this movie. It was meant to be what it was, it isn't supposed to be thought-provoking, it's satire. It's kinda like 'Dude Where's My Car', it was sooo dumb, yet that was the point. That's what made IT funny. A lot of people didn't get that one either. People have a tendency to try too read to much into movies, that they totally miss the point that it's for entertainment. I'm not attempting to put anyone down, but I really NEVER have to 'think' about what a movie means. If you do, then the director really didn't do his/her job. It's their job to interpret a story for the viewer so that that viewer DOESN'T have to try to GET the meaning of it. When I go on these boards, it amazes me how people are always trying to get the meaning of movies. I come on here to see other people's opinions on the movies, to see if they like or dislike the storylines, acting, etc. I don't come here to find out what the movie was trying to convey. I can figure that out on my own. I have yet to question the point of a movie. I may question why it was made if the storyline was not great, but never because I didn't GET it. Maybe, its because my literature teachers made us do papers on what the author meant to portray to us when writing a certain novel/story/peom. They taught us how to understand a storyline, I guess. However, the written word takes more thought and you do have to think about it, sometimes. Movies are not supposed to be, not IF the director, screenwriter, actors...did their job. They are our interpretors, professors, they break it down and present it to us. Once that has been done, then all that's left to discuss is whether or not the storyline was good/bad well told.

reply

Yeah, this movie was terrible. There wasn't anything redeeming about it. If it was supposed to be a dumb, mind-numbing comedy, then it shouldn't have tried to simultaneously be a satire of the Bush administration. I wish they would've just made a movie that was a parody of American Idol, because it really wasn't funny as a commentary on the American government of the time. It was just really, REALLY lame.

reply

Can't believe I spent money seeing this *beep*

I thought it was very funny !

I don't think it's brilliant or anything, but I think it generally works really well, and is spot on in at least a couple of areas.
