True Does Not Funny Make

Read a lot of comments on this message board saying that this movie would appeal to those who live the lifestyle it presents, and I just needed to note that, at least in my case, it certainly did not. Granted it is all pretty spot on (except that there are 2 shirts in a ball not 3.5), but who cares? If I point out that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, is that funny, compelling or in any other way a meaningful or insightful observation?

To me this movie just seemed to be sort of following a Richard Cheese model of taking something familiar, skewing it's context slightly and praying that the audience dies from the hilarity of the concept before they notice the emptiness of the content. Just my 2 cents. Feel free to flame away.

I watched it this morining and I must say this movie was funny in a down played way. Nights sometimes dont go at all the way the movie describes it but it was funny to notice the little situation that do pop up when people go out. It is deff a movie for party people and those that like to hang out cause i think people who dont just wont get the jokes.

Drug dealer time...Beer goggles...pussy power, etc...I thought those were all funny observations the first 20-50 times I heard them but that was long, long, long before I saw this movie. Do have to admit that I hadn't heard the hot-dog rating before, and I thought the scene near the end with the pussy mohawk rant was hilarious but that was, honestly, the only thing I laughed at during the whole movie.

Jeremy Harmon, you seem to imply that you have done it and seen it all andthat's why you didn't find this film funny, but I sense that you are full of it, since the example you give (you say there are only "two shirts" in a "ball" lead me to beleive that you are full of it. (An eightball is an eigth of an onuce, three and a half grammes (shirts)).

You say you had heard all the jokes in it way before seeing the film...really now!! I actually coined the term "fauxmosexual" so again you are most likley lying when you say you had heard it before.

Of course I didn't invent the term beer goggles, but the way its demonstrated in the film is unique and funny. Pussypower is also explained in witty way in the scene where the young girl lifts her skirt for the candy bar. (had you seen that befere - I doubt it) I also find it difficult to beleive you had heard the term "guest bindle" before seeing the movie.

It just seems like you are hatng for the sake of hating. I never really understood why people bother to post criticisms. I think that if you haven't got anythng nice to say, then you should keep your thoughts to your self.

Most people do find this film very funny.
Some people don't get the film, but those familiar with "the scene" as I most cetainly am, really app[reciate the attentions to detail and realism with whcih this satire on hipsters is made.

Paul:
This is a very funny film. I just had my sixtieth birthday so I'm not in the immediate demographic you were probably aiming for. However, I spend some time around media types and Hollywood celebs and it is not hard to see the connections between some of them and these characters.

I also agree with you that if somebody has nothing good or even useful to say, why bother to write. In fact, why do professional critics spend so much time bloviating about things they hate, instead of trying to find the overlooked film they will like and tell the rest of us about?

Anyway, you are a talented guy and I hope to see more of your work.

Waaah waaah waaah.

People critique works of art and entertainment. If you don't want to deal with the criticism, then don't express yourself.

I had not heard the term "fauxmosexual" before, but working the door in a gay bar I've seen plenty of guys doing exactly what you described...and it's probably a regional thing but here in sunny Coloradi "shirt" is short for "T-shirt" as in Teener, and obviously don't have to explain to you how many of those go into an 8 ball (nobody buys by the gram out here).

That having been said, I was commenting less on the movie than on the comments on the movie. I don't agree that people that relate to what's happening in the movie are necessarily going to see humor in it. I rarely hear laughs at the phrase "hurry up and wait" though anyone that hears it recognizes the cleverness and relates to it all to well.

And stop being so damned sensitive. I don't critique paintings or music or yoga instruction because those are things that I don't do, but amongst my own work (which I'm not going to be so pretentious as to say is anything other than very small time) I can and have looked at several productions and said far worse things than anything that I said in my review of your work here.

Now to be fair, I laughed my ass off at the Pussy Mohawk scene. I was quite impressed with the writing and delivery and loved it overall. It's just that the rest of the movie left me pretty flat. Sorry, it's just the truth.

(and please note that at no time did I say "this movie sucked *beep* and anybody that liked it sucked *beep* as well" or anything along the type of "criticism" that I don't tolerate)

Yes this film made me laugh and smile throughout. From the "being ready for the cops" hand off to the maps to the M..f..ing graphics by were all inventive AND funny. I study film, and I liked this one. Being familiar and able to relate may be helpful, but I recommend this to anyone. By the way, my friends and I are curious as to what genre it is, Comedy, doc., educational, or a mix??

Off subject, but just wanted to say I thought the film was brilliant. Thought it would be stupid and I'd just catch the first few minutes, and ended up staying up all night playing through some of my favorite parts. I haven't been this surprised and amazed with a film in a long, long time. Thanks Paul, I'll be following your work from here on out.

The humor in this film is primarily that of slight exaggeration or caricature, with the "educational film spoof" overlay. So there's going to be a lot of truth to the content, but it's still funny.

It worked for me. I found it enjoyable and insightful.

My wife absolutely hated it and went out in a bad mood because of it. But I think she was moody today anyway. I couldn't get a very rational explanation out of her about why she hated it.

Looks like your "shirt" dealer has been ripping you off 1.5 shirts outta each ball

ball = 8ball = 8th = 1/8th of an ounce = 3.5 grams

voila

reply

2 shirts in a ball? wow, no. that was just the example they used and the drug dealer your using happens to use different terms. your an idiot.

reply

There are 3.5 grams in an 8ball yo.

I like my beer cold, my music loud and my homosexuals flaming.
