What is the literal translation of this film's title "Quand j'etais chanteur" (sorry my French in almost non-existant) because here in the UK it is simply called "The Singer" & yet the original French title suggests the film's name is actually longer?

"When I was a singer" ; it's also the title of the bitter-sweet song sung by Michel Delpech, at the very end of the movie.
