One little scene that makes this film great (spoiler)

Don't get me wrong, there are many moments in the film that make it great, but the one that stands out?

Richard with his foot on the landmine.

I mean, it's a old device that's been used in everything from Red Dawn to Terminator 2 to Starship Troopers - the wounded man who stays behind with a single grenade (or bomb, or nuke) and sacrifices himself to give his comrades time to escape. It's been done to death, if you'll pardon the expression.

Only this time, when it comes to the moment of truth... the poor guy isn't brave enough to blow himself up, and the bad guys just laugh and walk right past him.

I can honestly say I've never seen that before. It takes an old cliche and turns it on its head. And it makes the final moment - where he finally grits his teeth and does it, taking two of them down with him - that much more satisfying.

I thought the best scene is the Gungho boss taking on the "bad guys" with the rocket launcher.

reply

Both these scenes were enjoyable. This was an all around good movie.

reply

Both of those are excellent and unexpected moments, but my personal favorite was Maggie smashing the head of her would-be rapist toward the end. I love it because you're all fired up to see her attacker get his just desserts, and she goes to that first rock and can't pick it up because it's too heavy. Then they play that goofy little music like it's the Three Bears, and she moves on to find the rock that's just her size and crushes the dude's head with it. Great little touch.

My fav scene has to be when Steve is feeling the effects of the mushrooms and goes outside only to greet another version of himself "Allright mate"! lmao every time

The Pie scene also cracks me up. "You found a pie?!"

Mmmmmm mmm! His dinner... is in the oven!

reply

My favourite scene is; "this is gonna hurt". Ouch.

reply

Yes. You found a pie???

Maybe it's cause Im a girl, but the part where the chick has a spider on her was pretty funny. I'm was just freaking out thinking she would freak out but she just smiles when she sees it and takes it outside, only to scream when she sees a face in the window. The opposite happened to me one time. I thought someone was trying to break into my home, so i opened the window totally ready to confront the a%^hole, only to see an enormous possum staring up at me with huge red eyes. I completely freaked out. I would have preferred a human intruder LOL.

Nah, I'm a guy and I felt the same. Face in the window? Pssshhh. Huge freakin' spider? Now *that* is creepy ;-)

I liked her character; she deserved better.

I didn't think the land mine scene was humorous. I actually saw that as a realistic reaction. I mean even though he knew his life was over he remained in fear of death and had to take two tries.

99% of us would probably have been hoping for a bullet to end the hopeless dilemma.

reply

Did someone say it was humourous?

reply

I don't recall but for my post to appear so irrelevant I can't but imagine a comment got edited or deleted? Anyway, I do believe I thought you were orignally poking fun at that aspect of the plot Razorz.

reply

Nope. I was saying that I thought it was bloody well done and one of the most effective parts of the film. When he finally stepped off the landmine I was actually welling up a little bit.

reply

Agree with you entirely.

reply

There was a bit of a delay after he stepped off the mine. Do you think he could have tried running away before it blew up and save himself? Even if I knew I was on a mine I'd probably try running away from it in a futile attempt to save myself.

reply

Except mines only work like that in films, if you do step on a mine the first you'll know about it is when it blows up.

reply

" varsas

Which is exactly appealed to my (possibly warped sense of humour) - they work for a shoddy munitions company that supplied to the area - he stepped on a faulty land mine - most likely supplied by his company

reply

I think the delay as he stepped off the mine was another humorous touch. It was one of their companies products(he says so to Maggie and Steve when they encounter him) and it turns out to be,at least a little bit, faulty! P.S. I also have to agree with the posters who mentioned the satisfied look on the guys face after he was decapitated! I've seen the film three times and it still makes me laugh!

reply

Why would they make mines where you can run and live?

A better idea would be to grab your shoe, push it down into the mine, slide your foot out and then get your other hand to dig the mine up and then carry it (with your first hand still pushing the shoe into the mine) to a town and get someone to phone a bomb squad.

"Mines blow up instantly after a certain pressure is applied. Only in hollywood do the mines 'wait' for the weight/pressure to move off the plate beforing setting off"

Nope. Those mines usually just blow off the leg of the standee and leave the person alive. Other mines wait for the foot to be removed, fly a few feet in the air, explode and take out the standee and other people close by as well.

How about the scene the where the guy's head is chopped off?
His head rolls a few feet away and he sees his own body squirting blood. His head still conscious looks around and he has this kind of satisfied look ons his face saying "I knew i was right" LOL. That cracked me up. (he was having a discussion earlier explaining how a chopped off head still can think for a couple of minutes and the other person disagreed..)

reply

try it and let us know the results :O)

reply

Yeah I really liked that scene you could see the dilemma. Logially it made sense to step off it and take all of them with himand since he had to at some point it might as well have been then but when itcame to it he couldn't do it but then finally managed it. Your right that was much more interesting to watch than noble characters managing it off without a hitch

reply

One of my favourite parts is where the female lead does that guy in with a rock. It's just such a satisfying act of revenge. He's clearly out for the count, but she just looks for a bigger rock. Marvellous.

reply

The rock part is one of the best parts of the movie. I hate when a girl suddenly has super strength in horror/suspense films. I also love the rocket launcher part. Total fail yet funny.

reply

Funniest moment for me was with the guy bouncing on the diving board and then cutting later to when he walks in soaked and covered in leaves.... genius.

reply

Swimming pool episode.. i was sooo expecting to see him fall in the pool and maybe discover something intimidating there, as you would expect from the most of the horror movies. Instead, the movie keeps cutting to random scenes, like the skeleton one, and you actually never see him take a bath.

reply

When the first guy gets his leg caught in the bear trap, and they keep trying to open it wide enough to get his leg out before it evntually just gets cut off completely, they keep snapping it shut again and again. I counted 7 times, I think.

But the facial expression after the one guy is beheaded when he looks over and sees his body lying there is absolutely priceless.

Then trying to put the leg in the fridge, and having to take the boot off.

Also "I know we're mates, but if you look at my cock one more time i'm really gonna kick off" had me in stitches.
