Hahahaha, not funny...

Man, I expected this movie to show some true polynesian hilarity. But no, it didn't. Taking a big ode from the movie 'Brothers' and a slight character simulation from 'Boomerang' (i.e. Magasiva's character), it strayed from originality. I found it hard to laugh at the humour in the film. Maybe because Oscar Kightley wrote it. Sorry Oscar, but after every 'funny bit', i thought to myself "Wha? i could of thought of somethin that unfunny". I do admit the "I'm a size 13" joke was a laugh. However, the only person in the film that actually had me cracking up was Derek, the white office guy. Him tryna be samoan was some hilarious a ss s hit!

Overall, im just glad i caught this on dvd rather than the cinemas

reply

ok, your kidding right?

everyone is talking about this film. I caught it sunday night. The 4.20 session was sold out, so was the 6.30 session

Everyone clapped at the end, last time I heard people clap was lord of the rings.

Great movie, and it was funny. Derek the G from Glenfield, well yes, but there are so many fags like him in glenfield, so you yeah, agree with you on that one.

reply

No, its not my kidding...sorry I just had to point that one tiny insignificant grammatical error out. =D

Anyway, back to business.

Does this face - : | - say im kidding?

Look, the whole storyline, plot, message, theme, morale or whatever, i didn't mind.

It was just the humour. I know and met a lot of people who think the same. Most of the jokes were dry. Some were just old and cliched. I hated the poor acting that came from some of the extras

e.g. the little fat boy at the start who says, " you're in deeeep *beep* 'Hahaha, oh my god he swore! that's funny!' Or the big and little brother who make the two appearances at Leilani's front door. Staaank. That made me want to slap both of them in the face.

One thing that annoyed me was the four friends poor attempt at acting drunk. They were funnier when they were sober. That bit when Sione (Who I thought was a homo) slams the door in anger and the four of them let out a big "EEEEEEEEEHHHHHWWWWWW!!!", I thought "what do you mean you stole that from Lock, Stock!".

You said the 4.20 AND 6.30 sessions were sold out. You mean it actually sold out? twice? Unbelieveable! I would of thought everybody already saw it on dvd before it came out in cinemas.

What was that you say? People clapped at the end? Probably because they were glad it was finished.

I don't think Ive ever been to a movie in my life where anybody clapped at any film. At comedies people on the inside are probably laughin they a sses off. On the outside? They barely let out a smile.

But Back to the matter on hand. I got so much hype from people about Sione's Wedding that it was really, really, reeeaaally funny. But the only word that comes to mind... overrated.

yea, especially somethin like siones wedding. they gave every crew member in the movie a dvd after production finished. So of course it goes round until eventually i manage to score one off somebody for $20. i shouldve asked for half price for a half a rse film.

Hey well that's what you think and that's cool but i happended to love it! Probably because I felt i could relate to it so much because the guys are just like cousins and uncles I have, and I grew up and still live in the places the film is set in. It's so great to see samoan/polynesian comedy on the big screen and i'm really proud of the movie and as a samoan myself i feel it's great to support our artists'work. The fact that so many people (sadly many of our own polynesian people) have seen or bought pirated copies is really unfortunate because it's not often we see our stories brought to screen so we should support them as much as we can. Despite this i know the film is still going to do exceptionally well, hey it's already had a bigger opening than any other NZ film ever earning over $100 000 on it's first night. So even if you have seen the pirated copy you should go ahead and see it on the big screen, it's 100% more better quality and you'll enjoy it more. Good Work Sione's Crew!!

reply

I could relate to it too, but I just thought it still lacked true polynesian humour. Maybe it was because there weren't enough freshies in the movie. They were trying to be conservative samoans. And thats the thing, theres no uncles, aunties, mums or dads who play a solid part. Yea Albert's mums there, but shes not a real FOB. She actually speaks proper english in real life.

But, I guess if you still enjoyed the film, then so be it.

Remember 'Milburn Place' on Skitz from back in the day? Now that was funny...
David Fane should keep playing FOB characters, cause thats where hes best in comedies.

Yep i totally understand what you're saying and a movie depicting the typical FOBS would also be funny but we do have a lot of that already don't you think? We had Milburn Place like you said and we have 'Bro Town' and 'Laughing with Samoans' who all address Polynesian/FOB stereotypes and poke fun at it, as well as other comics like the Brownies and Killa Kokonut Krew. As much as I love cracking up at FOB characters and humour, you don't want it to get old and worn out. In terms of island humour i think we need to broaden our ideas a bit more. My mum commented that there were no characters like fathers in the movie too, ok maybe everyone won't agree with me, but the island mother has a central role in most families. I know mine does. And also, what do you mean by, 'they were trying to be conservative Samoans?'
I just think this film was coming from a younger generations point of view, and that's probably why there wasn't much focus on aunty/uncle/father characters. I'm 21 and cousins and friends around the same age all appreciated it more than my mum and aunties because they didn't get the humour as much as we did. I just think that Polynesians shouldn't always have to live up to the stereotypes, especially the negative ones, because we're all different. In saying that, I still do love all aspects of Polynesian comedy.

reply

[deleted]

Well, all I can say is, a lot of people liked it and a lot of people didn't.

Im 19, so I get what you're saying about the whole younger generation thing.

But we still needed to have the older generation there so you could say, "My folks are still like that!". The whole conservative samoans thing? I don't know I got carried away...sorry, ha.

I thought you might bring up the negative stereotype thing. But you see, we're only poking fun at ourselves. White people can't say much cos they too have an image from polynesians. It's easy for me being half-cast, I can look at it from both sides! So really, both races have somethin to make fun at each other.

You're right the ideas should be broadened, but i don't think the fob humour will ever get worn out.

If you liked it the though, then im glad. And it did do well, apparently made the most ever in NZ for it's first week. Weird, i thought Lord Of The Rings would of had that.

Even still, Sione's Wedding just wasn't my cup of koko (haha).

Now somebody go make me one, or I KEEEEL YOU!

Personally, I liked it. I thought it was pretty funny and I thought it was good that they didn't have to rely on the usual fob humour to get laughs.

I also agree with the other person who said that people should go and pay to see the movie. Support your fellow PIs people! It's rare to see our people on the big screen and I personally would like to see it more often. Everyone I've talked to about the movie has a friend/cousin/etc who has a copy of the dvd, so that's a whole lot of money not going towards the people who deserve it.

But anyway, I'm not here to enforce the rules of piracy and whatnot, props to you man for having an opinion and sharing it with everyone :)

Just wanted to add in my 5 cents.

Why does me watching the dvd automatically say i havent seen the movie? Ive just been telling you and every other person what goes on in the film! And all you can say is "uhhhh you dont make sense". YOU HAVE NO SENSE AT ALL.

You said im starting gossip...GOSSIP??? What sort of woman talk is that!

Your gettin an insight on my character too? What are you a psychiatrist!

You keep looking forward to my movie. I didnt even breathe about making a movie. I said if i had the time (which the films writers had), i could write better jokes (not make a movie). Im not being an egotist, im just stating a fact, haha.

You got one thing right though. Me backing myself. What, dont you have self-esteem? Are you a bit of a push over whos only way of gettin at people is thru the computer?

Geez, all i can say now is:

Evenin Folks,

Overall, i did think this movie was funny.. although i must admit i agree with Smooth Inc on some aspects , some of the script dialogue couldve been improved quite a bit. Yeps some lines were pretty dry and some of the extra's acting as well (the kid at the start and Leilani's family were pretty bad) .The movie was filmed in 6 weeks.. which is a pretty tight timeframe..
maybe this had a bearing on a script which in essence was good , but didnt completely pull it off,

I agree with the comparison to Milburn Place ( ive still got all the episodes on tape ... somewhere :-) ) . Sione's Wedding wouldve really hit some major heights if it had that sense of humour in it.. Its still fob humour but looks more natural.. probably not an accurate description.. but im sure you all know what im saying.

With that in mind, its probably not entirely possible to bring that type of humour
to the big screen. The movie's about samoans/polynesians but it may be the humour had to be shaped so it appealed to everyone not just polynesians. This movie will appeal to everyone.

On a whole.. still a good movie that had a lot more potential. Well done to everyone involved for getting it off the ground in the first place.

My 2 cents worth :-)

Just because it is an "unfinished" version of the film, it doesn't mean it's like all in half with bits missing. The copy, even though it was unfinished, would still APPEAR to be a complete film because it will be a draft cut — most likely complete with credits, music and everything.

The finished film that people see in cinemas would be slightly different in ways, maybe slightly different cutting of certain scenes, or maybe different music in another scene. This is the process all films go through in post-production after people see cuts and suggest changes.

But it would still pretty much represent the general appearance of the finished released product.

If you find the DVD version unfunny then you still have a valid critique of the film!

It's total bullsh*t that people are watching this on pirated dvd's I work for the biggest dvd distributor in NZ and even though this movie is not our title it's still fkn stink that people aren't out there supporting local sh*t same goes for nz music anyone who's got pirated copies of Fat Freddy's Drop & the like deserves an ass whiping..

Anyhoo, i thought this movie was alright I'm Rarotongan and could relate to the PI humour which was actually lacking.. I thought it was pretty funny when what's his face went round to see Tueila after they broke up and the brothers were like "you come to give her the bash" .. it was just funny.. nothing funny about domestic violence of course but that was funny and stupid..

That Samoan chick was a bit of a stupid character .. I mean seriously I can't imagine someone fresh off the islands coming to new zealand and acting like that, she wasn't at all awestruck it was just a bit .. wateva.. She was pretty damn gorgeous though..

Ahh for f uck sakes, cutinpaste, it was hilarious listening to you at first. But now youre becoming an annoying mule.

You obviously did not pick up on his slight euphemism for saying that this movie was not funny, whether you watched it in the movies or on the 'unfinished' dvd.

Damn... you are stupid!

You know what, they wouldnt of had this piracy problem if theyd kept the f uckin thing more secured! They did well anyway, what are they b itchin about!

cutinpaste, it's true — you totally missed the point of my post.

I wasn't talking about movie piracy per se, I was talking about the state of 'unfinished' films.

You should probably read each post twice and then probably once more just to make sure you get the drift before going and slamming your agro on that keyboard because you're not making much sense.

Also, enough with the personal insults, not that I care, but you just sound really immature and dim-witted. How about sit for a few minutes, breath in and out, relax and then let your brain form a comprehensible and thought-provoking response that makes us all see your point!

Rachel Cakes... Never judge by a preview.

The movie was OK... Nothing I'd rewatch, not that funny at all really. The funniest part was shown in the previews.

reply

Far out kids, calm down.
It really just depends what you're into and where you come from, as to whether or not you found the movie funny.

For me personally, it was very enjoyable - as a Polynesian Kiwi, the 'cultural humour', the references, even the locations (Grey Lynn park!) all made complete sense to me. Admittedly, there were some moments where I was just a bit 'Huh?', but I do believe that happens in a great deal of movies. And as I think we all agree, Derek was hilarious. I feel somewhat priveleged to have my hometown simultaneously promoted and mocked!

Basically, I could relate to the film, and that's partly why I enjoyed it so much - the same can be said for bro'Town, and indeed for most Polynesian comedies out there. Perhaps that isn't a good selling point for a movie, but I (as well as a large proportion of the intended audience) wasn't out for creative genius - I just wanted a good laugh and a few moments where I could say "I know exactly what they mean!", which is what I got.
