American Soldiers' Uniforms (Possible Goof?)?

Just saw this the other day (knew the story from way back and book its based on, BTW), thought I'd mention a possible goof(?): when Hans-Jurgen encounters the black American soldiers riding the armored car at the beginning and end of the film (same scene, bookended), they appear to wearing dress uniforms(?)! Since this incident supposedly takes place on V-E Day and the men are still in a "combat mode", it's much more likely they'd be wearing regular combat fatigue uniforms. I get the impression some eager researcher on the movie, trying to be accurate, saw pictures of US troops in post-war Germany (who would normally wear the dress one) and went with that! Has anyone else noticed this? Any thoughts?
