I liked this film, but two nits to pick....

I didn't like that Ahmad quit the job Mohammed got him with Manish (I think that's the name). Some here have suggested he felt that it was demeaning and that Manish was taking advantage of him. Perhaps, but it probably paid better and was easier to do than his cart job (at that point, he could have sold the cart or used it periodically for extra cash, or rented it out).

The second thing that bothered me is that he didn't get the cart insurance. If he'd finally paid off the cart, he should have had the cash to pay for the insurance, which would have had to be less than the money he set aside to buy the cart (and yes, I know he got the last $500 from Mohammed).

All in all, this film reminded me quite a bit of the Dardenne brothers' 'Rosetta;' which came first and was actually better I thought.

Still, after watching this, I felt awfully fortunate.

i thought he quite the job because he was sick of mohammed and manesh, and couldn't stand mohammed and noem together

about the cart it seems he just worked his ass off just to pay off the final 500 bones so i could understand not having insurance right away, but yea the dude he bought it from was definitely shady and was probably the one who stole it

laughs are cheap, I'm going for gasps

I don't think someone with "a good corner" and regular customers can afford to take up "periodic" coffee selling. Someone else will take your real estate and your customers if you're not on the spot every damn workday.

Very apt comparison to Rosetta.

I actually had a bit more patience with this film hauling me through the dark streets of Manhattan morning after morning than with watching Rosetta pull her boots off and on 400 times. Maybe because I was thinking about larger issues of immigration and joblessness than I was when I saw Rosetta years ago. Movies reach us in different ways at different times.
