I hate Rudge

I liked this movie and the writing was good except for the character of Rudge. None of his remarks that were supposed to be funny were even remotely so and then in the scene where the boys' futures are revealed he says that he brings wives to the new houses his company builds and gets *beep* galore." Is the audience supposed to admire that? What a total scumbag. It's not even believable anyway since he is such an ugly wanker.

lol... I guess he's probably the most polarizing of all the characters, because he seemingly has no redeeming factors to his character. Not like Dakin, e.g. who under his conceited *beep* facade is really a nice guy.
However, I like Rudge. He's unapologetic about everything he wants and thinks and does. He doesn't give a *beep* if people like him or not, he's just the way he is and if anyone isn't okay with it, then that person can just go to hell for all he cares.
He plays the dumb jock a bit, but I think he's not as stupid as he comes accross. Yes, he probably really doesn't know who Sartre was, but the "They keep telling us we have to lie" line afterwards reveals that he's really not as dumb as he's letting on. And let me just say, being a history teacher myself, the "History is just one thing after another" line was awesome. :D If I wasn't a history teacher, I'd probably call it the most insightful remark of the whole film/play (I just don't like that it was repeated at the end. I think it should have been left alone)
The fact that his favorite thing about his business is that he get's laid nonstop... well, I like that, too. It just shows that he didn't let life get to him. He's still just the way he is, does what he wants and doesn't care what anyone thinks.
There is something to be said about being absolutely honest to yourself, and I think that Rudge is exactly that.

What's so insightful about "History is just one thing after another"? That sounds like the type of obvious observation an eight-year-old would make.

He's the only one who speaks the truth.
