shareNo. This is not an action packed samurai film. It's a fantastic period drama, and explores concepts that are commonly ignored by traditional chambara.
I loved this film. It was a great story, but I wouldn't call it action.
You will probably learn to enjoy these types of films as you mature and try new things. I certainly did.
Hey, nice to see some life on this much neglected board.
I agree with you entirely, Budorob, this is almost the opposite of what the OP is looking for, bless him - he just wants sword action, I would guess. Lone Wolf and Cub would probably suit.
Hana yori mo naho is one of my top favourite films of all time. I keep recommending it to people on the boards for the great Chushingura and for this upcoming Hollywood-style travesty 47 Ronin, just out of sheer mischief. It is an adorable film; if you don't come away from it with a big smile on your face, you have no heart.
Very nice to meet you. And thank you for recommending Chushingura, I have never seen it.
Lone Wolf and Cub!! HA! I used to love those, like Baby at the River Styx.
I've been impressed with recent films. Love and Honor, The Hidden Blade and When the Last Sword is Drawn just blew me away.
Hana is in whole other category. I lost it at the end, when the little kid shows up for his first lesson and the screen fades to black.
Oh, Budorob, do find Chushingura if you can, it's magnificent. There have been many tellings and retellings of the story, of course, but this one is probably the easiest to find, and is really worth the trouble. Here's the link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055850/. You recognised the 47 Ronin in Hana, of course? I love that part of it, it's such a tease.
shareOh, you mean the 48 Ronin? Ha ha! It was a nice surprise and clever to write in a story within a story. Lots and Lots! Lots and Lots!
shareIf you like Samurai films with great action, look to films from the 50s-60s, particularly those of Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai. The only good action recent Samurai film I've seen despite being fantastical and not as realistic as Toho productions of the past are the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy. I'd also recommend the Lone Wolf and Cub series.
