Main idea of this movie

I got it !

Real message of this movie is. Evrything has its price and it had to be paid sunner or later.

Things happened long time in the past reapiting, but now muslims are the victims.

M i right or what?

reply

im sorry, could you rephrase it, i think i see your point but im not exactly sure

I wouldn't quite agree with that. The film does not move on that level. It is much more focused on human character, not national identities. I guess the message might be that no human being is evil by birth, religious or ethnic identity. There is evil deeds that harm other people, but no one harms anyone by his own plain existance. Same with a child that has been born out of such a brutal crime as rape.

What past... 400 years ago??? I think serbs should move over their defet against turks and face it its not bosnians and not albanians, but turks.

They should be tried as a nations for crimes they did in bosnia and croatia

15 % of Serbs in Serbia bare turkish genes(e.i.Vlade divac), while at most less then 5 % of Bosnjaks in Sarajevo have turkish genes. In north and rural areas its 0. So there is no point of calling Bosnjaks Turkish while so many Serbs have Turkish ancestors.

The poster is probably referring to Vidovdan, 1389 - the day of the Serb defeat at Kosovo Polje (the Field of the Blackbirds).

I find it hard to understand the Bosniak identity. As I understand it, the border between Bosnia and Croatia is pretty much the border of the Ottoman Empire in the past. And it is because of Ottoman rule that Bosniaks became muslim.
But is a bosniak just "a south slav who became muslim because of ottoman rule"? Or did people already speak of "bosniaks" before ottoman rule?
Sorry, this is probably a pretty tricky question.

The writer and director of the movie, Jasmila Zbanjic, said in an interview that the movie was inspired by two of her younger friend who were raped by aggressors during the last war. Many questions went through her head at that time as did this story representing the possible life of young girls that went through the same traumatic thing.

This movie has 3 main charachters.

First there is Esma, a middle-aged very intelligent women, a former medical student, whose life got broken by the war. Since the war has ended, she is trying to find the floor under her feet, things are though, the only thing she has is her little daughter, who is entering the teenagehood. Esma is working night and day, only to be able to give everything to her daughter.

Second there is Sara, who is twelve, and is getting to the point where she is very seriously seeking for her true personality. This is the time when the father's part is coming up in socialisation, but in the case of Sara, there is one thing: she has no father.

And the ultimate main charachter is the war- and what it had done to people. Everything is twisted in life, everything has turned out of the "normal" state. People meet by identifying their dead member of the family, people are afraid, people run away from human touch, friendship is different, and everybody is desparetly seeking for all kind of memories from the past, when life was just ok.

The war has broken Esma's life in a way that she got raped and had a daughter. After a certain struggle she accepted the baby, and was a good mother for 12 years. The war has given life to Sara, but the question is what kind of life. She is half Serb in a society where the Serbs are not welcome, and she doesnt know yet where to put this thing in herself.

The point, where all the points of the past are coming up, and the questions about the future are arising is when Sara's school is organising a trip somewhere. It costs a lot of money, and obviously Esma needs help to get the money. Also, all of those kids, whose father died in the war can go with certain financial support. Here everyting collapses, all the lies what Esma has created in order to protect her daughter.

The movie is about a mother, a daughter, their love to each other, the fear of losing each other in a broken society. It is in a beautiful frame - the opening scene and the last scene are totally the same but totally differnet.
The first scene is that Sara is waking up her mom, who pretends to be asleep, than suddenly wakes up, and tickles her daughter. They fight, for fun.
The last one is when Esma giving up the fight and tells Sara the truth about her father and her too: her father is a chetnik, so she is a half-chetnik. they fight, for real.

Wonderful movie. One of the very best ones I have ever seen.
