Esma's boyfriend- did he leave or stay?

The scene was: they met by the gate. I am leaving said the guy. ESma was ready to say a farewell, but than she instead asked him: who is going to identify your dad now? He is gonna lie alone on that plastic sheet.

She confused the guy, to leave or go, to pick up the future, or the past? To stay or go? What did he do? I didnt get it from the movie.

At first she was angry he had to go thats why she made that comment then realised if he stayed he would probably be killed by the night club owner so she gave him a nice kiss goodbye.
