So... When did they study English?

When every class was seemingly a group therapy/psychology session? The class started about The Odyssey... All they wrote/talked about was their issues... How does that pass the curriculum?

they were reading Anne Frank and several other books in the Borders bags, remember?
Therefore the class was could be considered a Literature class and they were learning literature.

Also, we don't see every day of class. The story moves ahead an entire year, remember? So one can presume that she taught them grammar and mechanics English on other days that we didn't see.

It is a good day to die. May you go to the Hall of Heroes, Michael.

They read The Diary of Anne Frank, Romeo and Juliet, 12 Angry Men, and what was that gang book the girl gave to her father in prison?

So, reading, writing, analyzing and thinking critically wouldn't allow them to pass the curriculum?

If you look at the board there is often a lesson or instruction in some form of grammar or vocabulary. It isn't really discussed in the movie because, well... Who wants to watch a bunch of kids learning i before e except after c?
