Questions about opening

Okay, I tried to watch this when it was on last Thursday night, but just wasn't in the mood. I missed the very opening, and started with Tommy coming in for his first day in the tunnels. I got through about twenty minutes after that, which left me with a few questions:

1. Do you meet the scientist before the scene where he's telling them to dig all night and popping pills to stay awake?

2. Do you ever find out what was spraying out of the pipes that burst and severely injured several men and killed one? Was it supposed to be sulfuric acid, by any chance?

3. It was hard to follow what happened to the guy who talking to Matt and then got hit in the stomach by the liquid spewing out of pipes mentioned in the previous question. Were those his intestines coming out of his stomach?

At that point, I gave up. I may try again when I'm in more of a mood to sit through another stupid volcano movie.

To answer number 3, I belive it was. I couldn't see clearly, beause I didn't have my glasses on and I was half awake. But I belive the acid hit him in the stomach.

Number 2, Acid.

reply

I doubt the scene would have made much more sense if you'd had your glasses on. It was poorly lit, poorly photographed, and all in all rather confusing.

Thanks for the clarification.

reply

No problem!

I recorded it on DVR and rewatched it. I do agree, it was a bit too dark to see in the show. One man got shocked also.

reply

I forgot about the man getting electrocuted (or are we supposed to believe that he survived a shock with an arc that was that big?). While it's not uncommon for erupting volcanos to cause lightning in the atmosphere around them, it doesn't make sense that as the eruption is starting it would cause an electrical current to go through water pipes. Is sulfuric acid highly conductive? That also seemed implausible, although not surprising given the overall quality of the movie.

reply

1) No, we didn't - that was the first we saw of him.
2) Given the comments about 'sulphur dioxide' later on, yes, I think it was supposed to be sulphuric acid.
3) Yup, those were supposed to be his intestines.

The guy who got electrocuted, it was hard to see (as usual), but I think there was a broken cable that was supposed to be zapping him.

reply

Number 3 is correct. We were supposed to interpret those neon red, foam looking chunks as the man's guts. Though I'd swear I've never seen any human organs that color or those shapes.

reply

Me either. That's why I had to ask.

Okay, I did finally watch the whole thing, and honestly, I can't say it got any better as it went along. More plot holes than Swiss cheese. And the idiot who opens the door after burning his hand on the handle - lava doesn't tumble out a door like the contents of an overstuffed closet. But I still have a couple other questions for someone who may have watched more carefully:

1.) Why did the boat explode?

2.) Dr. Levering was left unconscious after being badly burned by the fire coming out of the drill shortly before the lava erupted from the site. How did he get out of there?

3.) Why does Dr. Levering collapse after shooting at and missing Matt? Was he already dead? Or merely unconscious, and going to die when the lava got to him?

I wish I could say the movie was worth the wait, but it wasn't...
