Would the mom really stay holed up for that long without venturing out?

They say in the beginning the last infected died months ago. I get that you'd be terrified but that's a long time not to at least peak out of a window enough times to realize that the infected are gone.

Right?

...I would however love to buy your lunch, maybe look at a family album...

yes,
WHAT YOU say is correct. It doesn't seem right that she would stay holed up for that long.

Bingo!

I could see a reason for her not trying to go outside even if you don't see them outside your window. The infected seemed to follow noise. Seems to me safest thing would be to stay inside. Wouldn't want to step outside, accidentally hit a trash can and all of a sudden you're being swarmed.

While she resisted the infection, she was obviously mentally damaged.
