Good solid start to a horror movie. I was equally impressed by dawn of the Dead remake and scream.
Good balance of tension and jumpy scares.

You are so on point. I love the dead movies and thought the reboot was going to be excellent based on the opening scene, which was shown on television as a teaser, to promote the movie. Sadly, it devolved quickly when they entered the mall.

imo the Dawn remake is superior to the original, and Zack Snyder's ONLY great film-- in fact, he has wandered so far away from its greatness that I wonder if Romero was ghost-directing a lot of it

Its only major flaw was CJ's instant transformation from a--hole to nice guy. If you've attended screenwriting classes then you know that there should be behavior that leads to a "character arc" / gradual transformation. There was absolutely no indication that he was going to be a selfless, nice guy prior to certain key events.



Agree totally. I'm a big Romero fan but I too prefer the remake. Awesome movie.

And I am glad they scrapped having Ana and Michael fall in love/hookup. So unnecessary and the woman JUST lost her husband whom they exhibited were happily married

This one is pretty good.

Sticking with the same genre, Disturbia has a really good opening scene (I guess that may be more of a thriller as opposed to Horror). I'd also add The Faculty as one of the best. Both Scream 1 and 2 are good as well.

...I would however love to buy your lunch, maybe look at a family album...

Dawn of the Dead and 28 Weeks Later do have the best intros. I especially like the way the intro music is used. The looping sound as it gradually gets builds up is almost perfect in the way it builds the tensoins. But nothing can quite measure up to Johnny Cash's The Man Comes Around. It sets DOTD up perfectly.

I have watched several times up to the main breakout scene at the lab/Sector 1. It's pretty intense stuff that I like because it's something we didn't see in the first movie. Imagine a whole country going up like that. I guess the closest we've seen is the scene in World War Z when Brad Pitt and his family try to get out of town - but that's just boring old zombies. I still think the Rage virus is the scariest thing around.

I have no clue about horror movies (besides Alien and Poltergeist and stuff like that) and literally never watch trailers. Some years ago I managed to record and put this on thinking it was a nice, offbeat Danny Boyle flick. A wonderful shocking surprise! Can't recall any other experience like that since being a kid and seeing Hitchcocks' Birds for the first time.

Re-watched it tonight...well...leaving it there for now.

I've seen this movie countless times over the years, it's a favorite.. Anyways, I remember my best friend and I watching this in the theater opening weekend, and we both were just enamored with the beginning sequence.. It really sets the tone of the whole movie.. Certainly if not THE best then close to the best opening sequence of any film I've seen.

It's so good that I honestly CAN'T watch it whenever we re-watch the movie. It's so intense, frightening, heartbreaking, and nail biting. Sheer perfection.
