Boring!

This movies is boring as a dogs ass! Really, it is.
The theme is up to date but it is a boring production. Nothing else. Not a masterpiece - or something like that.
What do you think?

reply

I know , this is not a masterpiece, but is better than a lot of (for example) Oscars´ nominated movies.

This is a classic story about the power management.
Very very well acting.
Very well made, whihtout surprises but with a solid development.

There are not car rice, not speed motorbike, no fist fight, there are only strong personalities fighting in the political-bussines space.

For me was a 8.

Okay: the acting was good. But that´s all.
There is nothig new in this story. Nothing enlightening.
The editing is awful. The music is terrible.
One storyline could have been more extendet: the suicide attemp/attempted murder of the leading characters (Huppert) husband. But.... it leads the audience into the big nothing. Its a bumbling script und ragged directing.

For me it is a clear 1.

Brilliant, a typical Chabrol/Huppert collaboration.

reply

This is MASTERPIECE!Chabrol is master of cinema

reply

Excellent film!!! A magnificent work performed by Huppert and directed by Chabrol!! Just delicious!!

reply

i agree.

Just about as perfect as you can get.

I loved how Hummeau went from planning his stay at the Royal suite, and ten seconds later he is arrested, and wakes up in prison.

Her red gloves were a nice touch, also how she called these crooks, "my customers"

reply

and the music was terrible? I think it's simply remarkable, while the picture is a clear 8

reply

Please count me in! What a waste!

reply

boring for me, too. Even though I knew I was missing something about a somewhat-current French poltiical scandal, I couldn't make it through. The comedy of power riff I got pretty early on and then it just wasn't comedic enough. But Huppert, man, how old is she? She still looks 21.

reply

yeah, she is a cutie pie. her smoking is not that cool, though.....

reply

her smoking is not that cool, though.....
Oh, give over. It was part of the character she played.

What would you say about an actor in a film in which he kills somebody, that he was a great looking guy but his murdering wasn't that cool? It's film

reply

Ok, I've been reading the IMDb boards for years, read tons of reviews and opinions about movies but hardly ever had anything to say that wasn't said already. But this time I just have to add my 0,02 EUR about this particular movie: it is definitely the most boring and pointless film I've ever watched. Ok, French movies and especially the dialogues are much different from the typical Hollywood films most of the time, they're fast, abrupt and you constantly need to stay alert to follow the meaning. But, this movie really takes it over the top. The whole dialogues in this movie go like this:

A: Where have you been today?
B: I would like a cup of tea.
A: And what did you do there?
B: Thanks, a bit of sugar with it, please.
A: I see, sounds good. How it Joe doing?
B: Wow, look at what's written in the newspaper!

Arrrghhhh!!! Can anyone explain in detail what kind of financial/corporate crimes were done by the suspects in this movie, why they did them or how they did them? I'm sure no one can. Ok, then maybe this movie is rather about the person Jeanne Charmant-Killman and her private life? We learn she has a cousin who plays poker and used to study and who broke up with his girlfriend - WOW, exciting. Her husband is working at some kind of lab or hospital and obviously not very happy with their current relationship - WOW, even more exciting. Jeanne herself works alot trying to make the bad guys go to jail and pay for their (unknown) crimes - just incredible! But how is all this connected, or rather, what does the director want to tell us in particular? It is probably the only movie that I've watched in my life that doesn't even transport the slightest message...

Actually, I was hoping for something actually exciting to happen, like Jeanne and her cousin making out since she was always laughing when they talked and she seemed to enjoy his company much more than that of her husband. Also, they were always so close (in terms of body distance) to each other. Plus, Jeannes husband seemed kind of jealous when Jeanne and her cousin were together.

Or, that the big surprise event will come up in the end of the movie, like her husband and/or cousin being involved in all those misterious and evil corporate crimes... but, sigh, that was of course not going to happen and you probably need a lot of fantasy for this scenario to make sense.

This movie is simply about NOTHING!

reply

And your message is pointless as well since you didn't understand anything about this moive. Good bye.

the movie is impeccable. i loved the "gloves" thing, a reminder of the judge's past as a person who earned her living cleaning houses. chabrol always delivers -- a little wink amidst the shuddering...

Its basically about corruption at high levels, misappropriation of state funds. By the way, it is her nephew (on her husband's side), not her cousin. She did seem very close to her nephew though. It was not a brilliant film but it was well-executed. The point is not to make a comedic film but a study on the farce of power.

This movie was rubbish, nothing near a masterpiece. I believe if Charbol had permission to a film based on the actual events of the Elf scandal, not on events that are similiar, and used actual names, companies, situations and people this movie would've been great. Unfortunately it wasn't.

reply

It's certainly not Chabrol's best, but it's no rubbish either!

sorry but i would rather say your review is about nothing

even though this is by far not my favorite Chabrol film and Chabrol not by far my favorite director either but really....

the way you elaborate on your expectations about how a movie should be....

reply

It's not boring: It's hilarious. Deliberately so. The music usually amounts to a knowing wink. Judge mme "charmant-killman"?!!!

In answer to someone else here, Hubbert doesn't look 21. Aside from the other-age but sadly French tobacco addiction she looks gloriously 50.

An interesting post, Cannes2000. I have to say that on one viewing the film did not grab me that much. I felt that it was getting a little lost along the way and thus did not hold me spellbound. I will re-watch it at some future stage, as I am a great fan of Chabrol, but for the moment, I can only bring myself to rate it 5.5/10. Not exactly boring but... Ah well, must be me

reply

I agree woth the OP- corruption has never been made to appear so boring, and I don't mean the "banal face of evil" and all that. Being a huge Chabrol fan, I found this possibly his weakest film to date.

It is incredibly boring and not just the plot, the cinematography is boring, the dialogue is boring, the lighting is boring, the camera-work is boring, the sets are boring, the costumes are boring, the editing is boring (and rather amateur at times) - it’s just a tedious, tedious experience.

Consider this one little nugget: the husband jumps out a window and the camera gives us a dry exposition after the fact. The film visually ignores one of the few dynamic events it creates.

It looks like the production had absolutely no money and no creativity to make up for it. If you have to shoot in your own production offices so be it, but at least give me some interesting camera angles or dramatic lighting. That doesn’t cost anything but effort.

You want boring? Try Andy Warhol. He made an eight hour film of a light on top of the Empire State Building from another building. The only action was a glimpse of a bird that flew by once. He also decreed that the movie had to be shown without any cuts. It was called Empire.

Then he filmed "Sleep" which is only five and a half hours long of a man sleeping on a couch.

I think I will get a grant to film a documentary also. Mine will feature six hours of paint drying.
