Wow, I just watch this film at the San Diego Film Festival. I loved it.
Great film. I never seen a latin film with this kind of sensibility and security.
When is it opening in the USA?
The movie is opening in April 14th, but in limited release. I've only seen the previews and it seems like a really good movie, with great latin american actors!!!, and YES THE MOVIE IS PERUVIAN!!!
shareI love film and I like the fact that this is a pan-regional Latin American effort. The film director has a music content/tv commercial prodcution background that is evident in the sharp scenes I saw from the trailer.
Most art house and international films tend to be trans-national collaborations of talent and financial resources. To say a film is from one country or another only suits the nationalist in us all but difficult to determine and pointless in the experience. We should support these films as there are so few Spanish language films that ever actually makes it to the US on a commercial basis.
Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil are major markets so it is no surprise to see so much being produced there. We only see a bit of that work at film festivals in the USA- particularly Latino/International festivals. As any filmmaker will tell you, particularly from Latin America, million dollar budgets are rare making it difficult for those films to find markets and distribution outside of the country where they are produced.
Even if it has a bit of a novela/fluff tinge to it, I am very excited to see this sexy Latin American film at the movies!
PS there was an article in the New York Times this weekend about new developments by the big Spanish media companies to produce films for Latino audiences in the USA.
la pelicula esta buenisima!!! y bueno definitvamente mexico tiene peliculas muy buenas like the one con gael garcia i think is padre maro something like that lol but oh well this movie NO ES MEXICANA! estoy casi segura que es peruana jaime bayly es peruano y el es el escritor , the cast son de muchos lugares christian is peruvian , manolo colombiano y barbara argentina , so lets just say its an awesome trabajo de latinos!
This movie is not Peruvian, Mexican, or from any other Latin American country (even though it is filmed in Chile). It’s produced by Panamax Films, a subisidiary of Lions Gate. The president is Jim McNamara, formerly head of Telemundo. The name of the production company is Shallow Films (how appropriate!). In the NY Times article, “Hispanic Films Have Yet to Catch the Same Wave as Hispanic TV” March 28, 2006, by Charles Lyons, McNamara states that this film is directed towards the US Spanish-speaking market, and that it is a telenovela for the big screen using popular telenovela stars, like Barbara Mori. It is yet another benighted effort by Hollywood to produce “Latin” films for the elusive U.S. Hispanic market which doesn’t seem to go for quality Mexican, Argentine, or Brazilian films like “Y tu mama, tambien.” Charles Lyons, the author of the article, misreads and misunderstands this market, insisting, like his informant McNamara, to see American Hispanics as a culturally and ethnically monolithic group that should be going in droves to see pathetic films like this.
shareI just saw this film the other day (video rental) and it is a remarkable film. Taunt, precise and beautifully framed in both its scenes and acting. Barbara Mori is beyond gorgeous in this film. I don't see the point of folks arguing about the nationality of the film (Peruvian is what I understand it to be) because for US audiences to just regard it as pan-LatinAmerican is just fine. In fact, many people think -- including myself at first -- think the film is Spanish as in Spain. Not so.
The creollo elite of Latin America in this film is what throws off US viewers into thinking this film is from a city like Madrid or something, not South America or Mexico.
What is exciting to me about this film is just how well crafted it was. Very polished and sophisticated, on par with any US or French film out there as a production.
shareDefinately not Mexican, Mexican cinema is much better. They do want to give it a Mexican appeal for marketing purposes, thats misleading advertising, and I suggest to all Mexicans to Boycott the flick.
sharedialogs in this movie sux, im mexican and know a lot of people that speak that way, but in the movie they are too forced and unnatural
shareI totallly agree. I lived in mexico city, the way that you can tell that Gonzalo is trying to hard to act mexican is by the way he speaks to zoe. You would never use wey, or cabron to a woman. He uses it a lot.
To his brother he did a good job.. he also speaks that way to the other girl.
I'm not saying that he should not use bad words...
for example instead he could of used,,, No mames pendeja,... but he uses Wey WAY to much to speak to a woman...
MAybe it's just me... anybody Agree?
