Argentina comment

During the scene in which Dupree is giving his "presentation" at Molly's school, he says that some of the kids will end up being lazy and doing nothing, and he mentions that people are not so bad about that in Europe and in South America. So right then and there I thought to myself "huh, he mentioned South America, how interesting", and then he goes on to say something like he was in Argentina once and he saw a lot of lazy people there. Lol, wow, that made me laugh... I'm from Argentina, so that definitely caught my attention. It was a little mean but funny at the same time. Funny that the writers chose to mention a not so well-known country (to some people) as Argentina.

Phoebe: Fire alarm?!?

[Translation]
There's a little big difference between "being lazy" and "relaxing". To my mind, and as an Argentinian, I didn't find the comment funny at all since I understood that it meant to express the former concept, which doesn't do the country justice.

I'm from Argentina and I laughed at that too...you're right that it was funny that the writers mentioned a kinda unknown country like ours...:)

reply

I am not from Argentina, and I kind of thought that was a funny comment, but I seriously did not take the comment negatively, and thought that Owen meant that people are basically less uptight, more understanding and carefree and can relax more, and not worry so much about what North Americans think what needs to be accomplished by a certain age, and the pressure surrounding that.

I'm from paraguay, been to argentina once. i unederstood it

reply

Yo también soy argentino y creo que el comentario me gustó mas porque venia de Owen, que para mi es un grosoooo!!!

Who hasn't heard of Argentina??? I'm from the Uk, and I'm pretty Argentina is not a 'little known' country here, even if it's mostly a football thing :P

If you LOVE atheism and are 100% proud of it copy this and make it your signature!

My God Im from the Netherlands, Europe, this is a very tiny country but everybody in Europe knows where Argentina is. futhermore our future queen is from Argentina,..(maxima Zorrigueta) where do you come from with such a low self confidence?????

reply

Who says I have low self confidence?!? I only said that Argentina is a not so well known country to some, which is true! I didn't say most people don't know about Argentina, I just said "some"...

Fire Fighter: Phoebe Buffay?

that speech was the best part of the movie. way funny! i say break out the parrillada & empanadas!

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

reply

Argentina is about as unknown as France...

reply

I was also suprised when that person said that Argentina was a little known country. Then I relaised they were probably talking to a US audience - many of whom probably could not point to Argentina on a map. I am English and now live in Canada - so I am VERY familiar with Argentina, like somebody else said mainly because of football (but also because of a war over a little set of Islands in the South Atlantic).

reply

LOL, that surprised me too! We (I am a US citizen)studied South America when I was in the 5th grade so I am familiar w all the countries of that continent. Plus my son's best friend's family is from Argentina...they just returned from a trip down there!

buenos aires!

Just put it on the Underhill's tab.

And of course to Owen's character, Laziness is a really good thing. Hence that being somewhat the topic of his presentation.

Do they also call you Fro-derick?

reply

Guys,this is wrong!
why do think that Argentina is unknown country?
you really shouldn't think so,who doesn't know Argentina!
(thanks to Leo Messi & Maradona..haha,just kidding)

reply

And of course to Owen's character...
It was just indicative of Dupree's empty babbling.
