Ill-Informed Critics didn't get this movie

Boyd van Hoeij, european-films.net, June 27 2006
"It feels so safe that when a character dies we do not really mind, since we are reassured by the knowledge that the actors portraying them are just doing their well-paid jobs."

It's supposed to feel safe! I's from "La Belle Epoque" a bygone era, and it reproduces the feeling and sentiment of the time! A very optimistic time. Also it serves a bit as documentation of how things used to be "dangerous" back then, in ways that could look ridiculous to us now, but that's how it was. Also it successfully reproduces the tone of the tv series, so maybe iot "feels safe" but that's the goal and certainly not a fault! It is part of the charm of the film!
