He seemed so detached from his role. He sort of mumbled every line and displayed no form of emotion at all when delivering his lines. It must have been difficult for his co-stars to feed off him - imagine working with someone who doesn't seem to be trying. It was pathetic acting on his part. In Shes the Man at least he gave a better performance.
In my opinion this movie is a far cry from what it could have been. I first learned about it while watching so you think you can dance because they advertised it like crazy between performances. So armed with that information I figured that I would see some good old mix of genres and instead I wanted to stab myself with a fork.
For starters I paused the movie about a dozen times. Something I almost never do, unless absolutely necessary. This time around when I got bored I would hit pause and go wash dishes, throw stuff into laundry, mop my kitchen floor, threw out trash. I even went outside to to check my mailbox. What made the movie tolerable was comical relief. Something that I expected from the movie. What I saw beyond that, however, were horrible performances by the main cast. Couple that with the final performance and you get lost in sea of confusion.
Spoiler alert!
Main character looked like a beefy version of Paul Walker who we all know cant act. This guy could not act to save his life too. His overall clean look misplaced him in the "ghetto" and his inability to act made him a weak lead in this movie. His friends by contrast have been most un-ghetto like posers I have seen this year. Gold chains? They live in a ghetto. They boost cars. They live poor. What gold chains? And why did one of them have to die? More importantly why was he burried the next day? Lack of time transition did not make sence. Main guy calls it quits with dancing. Female loses her partner again and then this kid gets shot and bam next day they are all dancing on the stage?! Wait what? Couple that issue with fact that main leads had no chemistry together... and beyond my comprehension actually fell in love in real life?! Takes a deep breath.
And then of course the dancing....
In rehersals female lead did quite good. In one rehersal all by herself she did very well... in final performance she did very very poor. That kind of performance would land no jobs, scholarships, grants etc. Stand in dancers looked better on the screen than she did. I thought that "their dance" was half hip hop half ballet? What happened to that? When did it transmorph itself into rap/b-boy/hiphop and 2 seconds of ballet?
In the end I watched this movie after seeing SYTYCD advertise it and unfortunately I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. ...
RESPONDING TO SPOILER; IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED DO NOT READ ON (I don't know how to create the spoiler disguise):
You simply can not be this ignorant! I refuse to believe it.
In the ghetto, people do own gold jewelry. They also have jobs and and access to showers. Yes, people who live in the ghetto are clean. Just because you're not as well off doesn't mean you HAVE to be dirty and can't afford to have nice things. I'm guessing you've never left your safe suburb to know this. I also know many suburbans who don't shower everyday. You must have misconceptions from watching too many movies. With all of this said, the movie did suck.
I think he fit the role pretty well. He was supposed to be a mumbling ghetto white kid.... although in the scene where the black kid got shot he had NO emotion.
Spoilers . . . From his life being in a foster home and feel no self worth, the whole talking quietly and mumbling at times when he was trying to express himself worked for me.
I disagree. I thought his performance was pretty apot on for who the character is supposed to be. And who said he's a bad dancer? Are you kidding? He's fantastic. Maybe I prefer that style of dancing idk, but maybe I could agree that he's not the greatest actor but he is definitely a good dancer.
