Charming start undone by sitcom nonsense

One of those indie dramedies that is more like an overlong sitcom, like City Island and Puccini For Beginners.

Crusty *beep* father who is full of mindless prejudice and lacks decorum but has a change of heart. Kind of a stock character but still believable.

A rich, connected, intelligent woman deceiving an adoption agency - her husband died while the kid has been living with her so now it's a single parent family. Horrors! Like she would be so dumb. Like the agency would be so difficult.

A teacher at an elite school is passively going along with a sitcom unintentional deception of who he is to the adoption agency employee, even though the deception cannot possibly last. Nobody is that dumb. But the dumbest thing, and the problem with the whole movie, is the Janssen character misleading the agency. A *beep* plot machination.
