All in her head

Is it possible that Brendan's character was just over-exaggerated by Miranda? I mean, the whole story was shown from her point of view, so she could've just been a paranoid that everything he did was aimed at her; with him still being 'in love' with her and trying to ruin her life.
When she first met Brendan with her sister, the first thing she said to him when she was alone was "Are you just doing this to get at me?" (or something along those lines). To me it seems like a person must be pretty self involved to think that, let alone ask it. Though by her asking that it shows that she was bothered by their relationship, and Brendan obviously saw this too and used it to his advantage (to entertain this notion she has).

There's no actual proof that he murdered anyone, just that he was obsessed with money (writing to his sister to ask about inheritance, selling Laura's house)and was a bit of a prick.
Whereas Miranda is the one that becomes obsessed with him, doing everything to find out about his past life, contact his sister, and find his new home. But it's still portrayed as if Brendan's 'the bad guy' because she's always viewed him in this was (probably 'cause he read her diary).

Interesting thought, but I don’t think it was all in her head. Even if she was exaggerating certain elements, Brendan’s last girlfriend did have bruises on her, and there were scenes showing him grabbing her. But I think she did make things worse. She was talking about Brendan all the time to anyone she was with, so it made her look like she was stalking him. Especially when she went out with the guy (sorry, can’t remember his name) that hired her to do the work his latest property. He was interested in her professionally and personally, but all she could do was go on and on about Brendan. And when you’re on a date, and drinking, it’s probably not the best idea to talk non-stop about a guy you dated for 10 whole days. That makes her look crazy, not him! I don’t know if he did everything she suspected him of, but he was certainly guilty of some things.

I agree with you. I just finished watching it and all I could think of was that she was a real piece of work. Yes, Brendan wasn't a great guy, but I didn't get the idea that he was actually a murderer. An obsessive person, controlling, with an obvious mental instability, but I never felt like he was a killer. And what she did to him was planned even before he raped her (if it did happen that way, 'cause as you say, we only see it from her perspective) so it can't be justified as revenge for the assault.

I think she was the villain of the movie most definitely.

What about when they were alone and he would say inappropriate things? Or when he mentioned her diary at the dinner table randomly when she was trying to find out the truth about him, he was slowly turning every one of her family against her. Or when he left his sister the day of their wedding to marry Miranda's best friend who was in a serious relationship and it's made obvious that he manipulated her into marrying him? Or when he talked her sickly brother to get off his meds and stop visiting his therapist which led him to kill himself? Of course she was going to research and become obsessed with him. Also, when he's dating that other girl she even says that he's treating her badly to the point where she wants to move out. This guy was a psycho and he was single-handedly ruining her life. And no one else could see it but her.
