Why ditch radio and pistol?

First - just to get this out of the way - shame on Herzog for such a self-serving, disrespectful treatment of the true story:

Okay, as to the poorly fictionalized version:

I watched this on TV with plenty of commercial interruptions (and edits) - so maybe the full movie explains this, but . . . why did our hero stash his radio and sidearm? Aside from speculation (which I can do as well as most) - was any explanation provided?

thanks

As they were prepping for the mission, the commander told the pilots that the enemy were using their radios as a means to ambush American rescue teams, which means that if they crashed they were required to hide them in order to stop the Vietcong from using the radios against them.

It's not mentioned, but I was thinking that Dengler might have thought that he would elude his enemies, and possibly be able to make it back to where he stashed his pistol and radio to use later when the coast was clear so to speak.

"check the imdb cast list before asking who portrayed who in movies please"
