Did I count wrong or what? (*possible spoilers*)

Before they manage to escape, there were in my counting 436 people in the village.

When escaping, the cop gets killed, 435. The main character and Amanda leave, 433.

Final scene; his friend arrives and the sherrif tells there's going to be a party tomorrow. And that a twin was born. Add 3, makes it 436 again.

So where's the overpopulation of 1 coming from?

lol, I noticed that as soon as it ended too. We either missed something, or the director missed something. My count was the same as yours, Durst offing the deputy/Sisto and Amanda from collision=3, town woman had twins and sisto's friend=3. So why would they need to have another festival? I was pretty toasted when I watched pop.436 so I don't know for sure.

They did not want another festival that short in time, that is why they asked the deputy to kill the census-taker....instead, he killed the other deputy. Their was no other festival being planned.

I noticed the count to. When the man is being brought to town in the end the officer mentions a party coming up to him. The only thing I can assume is the officer says the party is to celebrate the birth of the twins and Bobby's engagement. Maybe, it's a "regular" party. You know, MINUS the hanging. :)

The main character is not part of the original 436 ?

i'm not sure if i missed it but where did you hear about the overpopulation at the end? i think what the movie tried to do is even out the population back into 436. when they said steve-o was 437th, they killed of the lady with the sash to bring it back to 436. well that's how i understand it since i was pretty baked.

pretty good movie for a b-horror, btw

I have the DVD, I replayed it. The party was to celebrate the passing of bad influence, that is, the whole thing with Steve and Amanda. And to celebrate the newborn twin. It was not the lottery thing, period.

I just watched it for the nth time. At the very end, when he's inviting the friend into town, he says that the Lord blessed them with rain that put out the garage fire. So, the celebration is as much for that as for them once more reaching their population goal: three dead and three additions. The storm we saw building as they made their escape could be "righteous" anger from whatever they've made a pact with. They say it's God, but is it? Anyway, that storm helped them save the garage. Actually, I missed that the other times! I thought they were celebrating the babies' birth and the engagement of two of their citizens. They also seem to have expected the friend to visit, evening out their population.

I like this film! I'm impressed with this film! I hadn't watched it for nearly a year and now am asking myself why I didn't videotape it! I also am a Jeremy Sisto fan since first seeing him in "Clueless" and "Hideaway".

No, there's no overpopulation at the end. Frank's arrival brings it back to 436. The festival the sheriff mentions isn't a sacrifice thing; it genuinely is in thanks for the rain, as he says.
