Question about the ending

Please forgive me for any mistakes with names, I saw this movie about a week ago, this has just been bothering me

Ok, so Kadys friend arrives and his tyre blows out and Bobby Caine tells him that they're preparing another festival because so-and-so had twins (Presumably because Kady and the little girl had left/died).

Assuming I got all that right, why do they need to have another festival? Because Bobby killed the other officer (I forget his name sorry), so wouldn't that make 433? Population minus Kady, the little girl and the officer? And then the woman has twins, so that's 435, plus Kadys friend?

Help/explanations would be greatly appreciated, thank you

hmm thats weird:

437 with Kady,-woman that hangs herself makes 436

Kady and girl dies: 434, minus officer 433

+ TWins and kadys friend makes 436!

ur right, there was no need for a new festival! Why did they have it then? :S

they did say it was for the rain...perhaps it wasn't a festival of having to kill one of their own after-all, but it would have been better if there was 437 and they had to kill one.

I thought that they only had the celebration should they exceed the number. In one of the final scenes, isn't there another woman giving birth? I supposed that she was having twins, too, which would equal the deaths of the two in the truck. Then, because the cop was killed, they needed Kady's friend for the correct number.

I sort of got the impression that the festival is not a regular celebration, as is the drawing in Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery". But, perhaps they do sacrifice when something like rain is needed. Of course, there were storm clouds building prior to the collision.

Now, I want to watch it a fourth time! Darn! Why didn't I videotape it one of the three times I watched it?! I'm so happy that I bailed out of "Night at the Museum" at the hour mark, in time to scan the movie guide and spot "Population/436" on 375 then 376 then 375 again! I love these "staggered" schedules!

You're assuming every festival in the town is one where someone kills themselves. The sheriff says the festival is in thanks for the rain that put out the fire. I think he's telling the truth. It's just a festival. Nobody is going to die. Remember, nobody knew Frank was coming; they're not psychic. But they're pleased he did, as his arrival brings the population back to 436.
