I just don't get that. If Pierrepoint (Tosh) has to hang his friend of many years, Tish, then how come he had no idea what his real name was when it was mentioned in the letter?
Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?
Pierrepoint probably knew Tish's first name but not his surname, so he never made the connection between "Jerry" (or whatever Tish's actual first name was) and his drinking buddy. He never would have thought that his friend could be a murderer, and so it never occurred to him that the person mentioned in the letter could be Tish based on the first name alone.
