Did Anybody Else Notice That Brian Wilson...

Didn't once touch his keyboard during his performance.

He does that all the time. He's a capable enough keyboardist, but for some reason these days, just waves his hands over his keyboard a bit. I guess it's a "security blanket" type thing for him, and that's understandable because he went a little nutty.

I live in yon castle, and I employ a poopsmith for reasons I don't care to disclose

Now that's a crap clip from a rubbish concert.

Of all those internationaly broadcast "mega" gigs it was second only to that awful Nelson Mandela one in London in 2001 (?) where the only vaguely interesting thing to happen was Mel B's halter neck top "accidentaly" bursting open giving the watching millions a brief glipse of her tits...

That said their were a few highlights to Party At the Palace:

01 - Ozzy Osbourne. Apparently the royal aide who booked the acts didn't know who Ozzy was other than that he was the star of a then popular TV show.

02 - Les Patterson's very amusing pre-recorded video link up with alter ego (and gig compare) Dame Edna Everage.

03 - An obviously very nervious Brian Wilson jabbering over Ruby Wax's onstage introduction.

04 - Brian Wilson playing his short but faultless set of California Girls (YES!!!), God Only Knows (YES!!!), The Warmth Of the Sun (YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and Good Vibrations (YES!!!!!!).

05 - Ray Davis singing Lola.

Everything else was pretty crappy or just passed me by.

Wait, so whatever he's waving his hands over ISN'T the electro-theremin?

reply

When not singing Brain Wilson these days spends most of his gigs just sitting behind (and occasionaly playing) his keyboard and leaves his band to actualy play the music. Concidering he wrote (or co-wrote) and arranged all the songs they play I wouldn't call it a cop out.

Actualy, the Beach Boys or Brian Wilson have never used a true theremin in their normal concerts (can't speak for the "Pet Sounds" or "Smile" shows) because the tuning is too tepremental. I forget what the name of the instument is but it works along the same principle as a theremin but uses a fixed metal slider to determin the pitch rather than the player's hand's proximity to the machine.
