I agree with the original poster, I didn't buy him at all as an ancient Roman, sword-wielding action hero. He never appeared comfortable even carrying a sword or doing all the heavy physical work. Firth's a fine actor, but he seemed to lack charisma and presence in this role. Of all the big historical action epics to come out the last twenty or so years, this was by far the worst miscast lead (even Colin Farrell as Alexander or Orlando Bloom as Balian were much better).
What's worse is that the film already has someone in its cast who would have felt just right in the role, Kevin McKidd, who's a sorely underrated actor. Some other people who would have been superior to Firth in this role: Clive Owen, Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana.
