Colin Firth as Aurelius?

The worst miscast since Mickey Rourke as Francis of Assissi?

Really, Colin Firth looks nothing like an action hero. He woudln't even do as Bond and everybody can play Bond.

If they took someone a nit more manly, like Clive Owen or Ray Stevenson, the movie would have gotten much better ratings.

Colin, stick to roles that suit you cuddly face...

I thought Firth was one of the better things in the movie, he plays the 'reluctant hero' archetype quite well. Otherwise, the role just wasn't meaty enought for Firth to make more of an impact.

I totally agree with you, I love Colin as the action/hero role, it was something that no one has seen him do, and i think he pulled it off, he should do more roles like that.

He was a good enough actor for the part. I think someone with classic leading man looks probably would have been more appealing to some folks, but I think he did a fine job.

I agree with the original poster, I didn't buy him at all as an ancient Roman, sword-wielding action hero. He never appeared comfortable even carrying a sword or doing all the heavy physical work. Firth's a fine actor, but he seemed to lack charisma and presence in this role. Of all the big historical action epics to come out the last twenty or so years, this was by far the worst miscast lead (even Colin Farrell as Alexander or Orlando Bloom as Balian were much better).

What's worse is that the film already has someone in its cast who would have felt just right in the role, Kevin McKidd, who's a sorely underrated actor. Some other people who would have been superior to Firth in this role: Clive Owen, Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana.

reply

Yeah, I think that's right.

I have just watched it and was thinking that few times I have seen such an awful miscast of a leading role in an otherwise decent movie, and how Gerard Buttler or Clive Owen would have been a much better choice.

It's not that Colin Firth was that bad, but the man just has no charisma. He had no chemestry with the actress who played Mira, either, and their "romantic" scenes were utterly embarassing. I have nothing against his acting, but he really hurt this movie.
