Why did the goverment agents stip the nazi-spy girl naked? It seemed like it was leading to something but I couldnt see what or why.

reply

The girl who gets interrogated by the british agents is a Soviet east german spy. figure they made her strip because she wouldn't break under the pressure, so they cranked it up and started to degrade her and make her do these things like "bend over and touch your toes". later in the movie they play mr nice guy with her to screw with her head.

reply

thnx.

but she still didn't give them information...SWTF??

Another thing that bothered me is why didnt the russian soldiers who rape Melanie (the third time she is gangraped) kill Thomas?? they just walk passed him in the hallway and he's holding his knife.

reply

Would not say that Melanie was raped the last time she is caught by Russian soldiers. She prostituted herself to them in exchange for Thomas's life, otherwise they would have killed or severly wounded him. Most likely that they would have raped her anyway, but she says she will go with them 'willingly' if they stop torturing Thomas.

Afterwards I figure the soldiers don't feel the need to bother with Thomas anymore as he is lying in coridoor beaten and semi-conscious and they've all been drinking and screwing Melanie in the bedroom - guess they're satisfied.

reply

in reply to original poster; the spy girl didn't seem to give them anything but they got her in a messed-up state where she would believe reverse information and they tell her that Thoams is a defector to the nazi-war criminal who features in the beginning of the movie in the KGB lecture. So they then indirectly get the KGB to begin hunting Thomas.

And agree that Melanie was not raped at end of film. she consents to sex with the soldiers so that they will not rape her like all the other soldiers do earlier in the movie - but this backfires anyway!

Think soldiers were too drunk and uninterested with Thomas so they jsut walk passed him - he's not holding knife either, he finds it under the stairs after soldiers leave.

LOL

What are you people talking about?. Of course she was raped!. There's the obvious threat of violence, so it's as much rape as if there would have been actual violence. Plus, she clearly fought with the soldiers in the bedroom, trying to escape, which is why we see her running away and the soldier shoots at her.

I agree Melanie WAS raped the 3rd time she is caught. she struggles with the asian soldier, he is all over her and she is crying and mad, but then she gives in and walks to the bedroom with all three of them. she consents to have sex with them only so they dont kill Thomaz. When she escapes she is hysterical. its different than the other times she is raped in the film, but is still rape.

reply

see the movie EINE FRAU IN BERLIN. many german women and girls prostituted or rather offered themsleves to allied soldiers as a form of preventing rape.

Melanie knew she was going to be raped again and so avoided it by offering herself to the soldiers.

This is one of the most Frank portrayals I have ever seen of the Soviet advance in to Germany in 1945.it is important to remember that the German occupation of The Soviet Union had been just as brutal, more systematically so,but brutal non the less. The Soviet Soldiers had been all but conditioned to believe that anything they wanted in Germany was there's by right,in revenge for German actions, and as a reward for 'Victory'! Very few females who the Red Army encountered escaped being raped and many were also murdered.
'Joy Division' was a very rewarding surprise for me I had no idea it would as good a film as it was, though harrowing,it was an incredible insight into how people from all sides acted in extreme ways through this traumatic time and during the 'Cold War' hysteria that followed.

Agree with that so much. I caught this on movies4men film channel last week and was blown away by the sheer unrelenting portrait of the invasion of rural eastern Germany. Unlike other WW2 films, this film is truly about 'people' regardless of the 'sides' they are supposed to be on, and therefore somehow shows the reality and horror of war (and post-war consequences) in a much deeper, lasting way. Very strong film which I am glad to have seen has been made.
