Yes, I also though he was one of the few bright spots in the movie. The problems the OP brings up are problems with the movie and the script/direction more than Evans.

I felt the same way. When I first watched this film (director Ben Wheatley and the DOP were each there for a Q&A actually. It was very cool), I went in knowing literally nothing about it or the director, and Wilder was the guy who really drew me into the film. Lit up the screen, made me enjoy the film more than anything else in it.

Just finished third watch (first after reading the novel), and Wilder is by far my favourite thing in the film. I love him, he's crazy, intense, passionate, simultaneously frightening and hilarious, strangely relatable. Every time Wilder re-emerges into the film I become excited; these for me are the most enjoyable scenes.

Yes, apparently due to one absolutely horrible movie, I've succumbed to the universal opinion I know nothing about acting.

BTW, I find it funny how an actor, who has never once been a standout, was in a movie that is generally seen as a failure, but little blogs point out his genius. Blogs, written by people who viewed his turn in every movie he's ever been in as genius.

I recently watched Purple Noon, the "original" Talented Mr. Ripley and while Alain Delon is revered for his looks, it's interesting to me that his role didn't make the Damon, Paltrow, Hoffman, and Law vision a complete joke. Here'a pretty boy, playing a brutish (in a sense) pretty boy, who nails it.

Here's my issue with Luke Evans in Hi-Rise. Until this post, I had forgot his role, his presence and forgot his name. Yet, despite Hiddleston's weak performance, I can't wait to see what he tackles next.

I also watched Robert Bresson's Mouchette last night and didn't like it, so I'm on a roll of not knowing anything about film...you?
