And on the flip side of the reviews...
I saw it at SXSW, too. Here's my review:
This slacker/anti-establishment comedy with Zooey Deschanel, Aaron Stanford, Izabella Miko, Christopher Lloyd and Keir O'Donnell had its
moments, but was basically a big soggy mess. If I hadn't seen Zooey in other stuff, I would have thought she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.
Brought to us courtesy of Michael Lehmann (who directed Heathers and The Truth About Cats and Dogs) Flakes is about the manager of a hip, funky
cereal bar in New Orleans and his "talented" artist girlfriend who battle it out over finding your dreams and growing (growing up, actually). It had a couple of funny moments - and one really brilliant line - but it's not enough to save this little indie. It's really sad when the very minor supporting characters are far more interesting than the main cast.
They're still looking for a distributor, and they might (maybe MTV), but unless you're a vapid 20-something, just skip it, either in theaters or on
TV.
