Anti-Capitalist

I liked the movie for the most part, but the whole anti-capitalism, anti establishment, etc... part pissed me off a bit.

reply

Why?

Get off the thruways and take the backroads.

reply

because it seems like it is becoming cool these days to be against freedom, independence, happiness, capitalism, etc... Particularly with capitalism; it is the best economic model there is. why pretend like that is not a fact, and try to appear as if it's the norm to dislike capitalism and freedom.

I did like the movie. I didn't like that part however.

Actually corporate America takes away a person's freedom. I don't know how old you are, but when I was kid (in the 60s) there were no strip malls, no wal or k-marts. Everything was singular with independent customer service, so you were treated right. Because the owners needed you.

Now all you see is corporate chains everywhere. There is barely freedom or choice.

Do you know that you can get a decent hamburger meal at a diner for just a dollar or two more then at McDonalds or Burger King? Yet people flock to these fast food joints because they think they're saving a huge amount of money.

It's not freedom people hate, it's corporate greed.

If you want to know how precious freedom is, just leave the US for a week.

While I agree with the broader sentiment of your post, I can't help but think that you and I didn't grow up in the same '60's, the golden age of the Military/Industrial complex. Not only did these things exist, but *everybody* was deluded by them, not just the idiots. At least some people believe differently today and are only thought of as traitors by a minority, not the majority.

reply

I agree with davidsmith666999. What does Capitalism have to do with freedom?

reply

Haha, you're a funny guy mike, you know why? Cause you strike me as the PERFECT example of a brainwashed, misunderstood, person living in this exact "Capitalist" society..where values and morals are moot. Capitalism does not EQUAL freedom. It equals freedom if you were born into a rich family that owns a business exploiting other people who are your slaves, working for minimum wage while the $ goes to the owner who doesn't do any of the labor. If you're Paris Hilton you have "freedom, independence, happiness" if you're Joe Schmoe chances are you're struggling, and you're far from having any of the said things.

reply

so what's your answer, mr elitist? socialism? equal distribution of wealth? it's always funny when people dislike capitalism yet offer no other acceptable alternative. let's hear what ya got sir.

reply

Think about what you're saying, first and foremost. It's NOT funny to dislike your precious system. It may be funny to you when you have your head stuck up deep down somewhere. Socialism? Yeah, what's your problem with it? Or are you one of those who think Socialism = People in Rags. The value of the Russian Ruble during the USSR was HIGHER than the Dollar. And before you veer off on a tangeant bashing how the Soviet Union was "a horrible place to live" it would help if you'd lived there. (all politics *beep* aside that were going on, hey, I'm not sayin having a centralized govt was perfect either...neither is your govt perfect).

It's definitely NOT funny to me to dislike capitalism, when thinking privatizing healthcare is a good idea and expect people to be healthy. It's definitely NOT funny to me that raping resources and overproducing only wasting a large sum of the products is helping the environment, etc etc. My answer WOULD indeed be Socialism, but for people like you and of course, the MAJORITY of Brainwashed americans - It's OK, your GOVERNMENT did it to you - would be galactically DIFFICULT to comprehend it. Because afterall, you do love having that EXTRA 1, 2, 10, thousand dollars in your pocket while somebody else is begging outside on the street because somebody felt it would be a good idea to "let that person go"

reply

I guess were gonna have to agree to disagree. I definately value freedom, and I find capitalism to be the only economic form of freedom. I will not bash your opinion as you are entitled to it.

reply

I'd advise you to do more reading on Capitalism, from UNBIASED sources. Try Karl Marx's Das Kapital for example. Or go see the ghetto and see what capitalism creates. I don't call that freedom.

You are an idiot. People are greedy. Lawyers are greedy. Politicians are lawyers. Yes, let's hand over all control to the lawyers. There is no such thing as true Socialism. It's impossible on a large scale. If we turned socialist everyone would be begging outside on the streets (except for those in control, those tied to the government, of course). Why don't you go take a vacation in (communist) China. Go see people sh*tting into holes in the ground, living under cardboard and plastic, go try to access youtube.com there or argue on this board, go see how well they take care of their 'carbon footprint' and then you can tell me how evil us 'brainwashed' Americans are. Capitalism is not perfect but we don't have true capitalism here in America anyway. We have the 'too big to fail' arguments being thrown around, we have corrupt politicians (which you would most definitely get in a 'socialist' country as well), we have liberals keeping companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac around, conservatives bringing us the patriot act, but you know what... at the end of the day.. at least we have the right to protest, the right to use the internet without being completely censored, the right to choose who we marry, where we work, at least we don't have KGB 'removing' us when we say something against our government (like in your precious USSR).

@Warpaint- Okay you do get that USSR and China aren't truly socialist they are dictatorships. For example of Socialism working you should look at the Ukrainian Makhnovist movement. It may not have lasted long but it worked while it was going.

And yes no system is perfect but hardly means we should just settle for Capitalism and not strive for something better.

Exactly. It didn't last, it never does. My point is those countries claim to be communist. That's what happens with communism/socialism. The intentions always start out great but corruption comes into play and you get countries like China and people living under cardboard. I'm sure a great deal of the Foxconn employees would love to live in evil America with the horrible capitalist government. Watch Reds. Read Animal Farm.

Capitalism has had its heyday. Now, it has reached the point where it is impeding the very things it once advanced: freedom, equality, fair bargaining between the rich and the poor.

I don't know what the answer is, but the worship of capitalism ONLY helps those who are already rich - and they reframe their power for you as your 'freedom' simply because the more people who support the system that benefits the powerful, the longer the powerful can remain powerful.

There are a thousand things in the U.S. that have only been hurt by being placed in the position where they have to be 'profitable.' Businessmen are good at making money, but they're usually very, very bad at making ethical decisions.

I almost never post on these boards but I just have to say how refreshing it is to see folks rationally discussing socialism and helping with the uphill battle to fight the propaganda that has misrepresented it and turned it into the boogey-man.

I hope just one person comes across this thread and is curious enough to dig deeper - we need to get educated about political and economic theory because the working people of this country (well, of the world really) have been so successfully divided-and-conquered by capitalist interests. We need to learn that we all have a lot more in common with each other than we do with them.

So thanks to davidsmith, terminatrix, and clonedhuman for taking the time to post about this . And terminatrix, das kapital happens to be the next book in my reading pile. :-)

I'd recommend Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed for anyone interested in gaining new perspective on the Russian revolution, and wsws.org for a look at current events from a different angle (along with decent archives on a variety of socialist thought and history). I could rant on and on about this but I'll leave it at that.

Capitalism and free market are getting confused here, I am afraid. Both of the Flakes are businessmen, hence participating in the free market. As small businessmen, I am not sure that either qualifies as a capitalist.

To me the film was addressing the difference between being engaged in a business and running a business. By this I mean the difference between a restaurant operated by a chef and a business operated by MBA's. If you cannot tell the difference between breakfast in a diner owned by the fry cook and dinner at TGI Fridays, it may be hard for you to understand one of the basic premises of this film.

Anyone know of any other fun movies like this that are a bit anti-capitalist?

reply

Well its not like movie disagreed with capitalism on academic level, movie did not disagree with capitalism as being bad system to rule the world. Movie disagreed on capitalism because these people want to create their own exclusive culture, have different values from capitalist mainstream culture, have a bit of rebellion on traditional authorities, have something to hate so they would feel stronger connection to each other, feel better about them selfs while they are not pursuing things that people are supposed to pursuit in mainstream capitalist system like well paying job, traditional values, hating hippies etc. This is what basically all the anti capitalist kids do. Its not that they would think capitalism is bad system they dont really want to change world to any alternative system. Element of anti capitalism is not central to the movie, element of alternative culture is.
