I have never seen one of these or even hear of one until this film, and as somewhat of a cereal enthusiast, I would love a place I could go and be able to try a bowl of something, instead of having to go to the store and get a whole box. Surely someone knows if there is a real cereal bar out there somewhere. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tip Jason! I will travel to this Philadelphia place you speak of and become a Master of Cereality! Or maybe I will get lucky and one will pop up closer to me :)
I wonder if there was a flier in the movie placed to give some kind of recognition to this Juju place? In one of the scenes there's a flier on the bulletin board behind the actors that says Juju and it appears has a picture of Kato from O.J. Simpson fame. It's the kind of flier you see around Nola advertising for concerts, raves, etc. Who knows?
I wonder if it was filmed around actual Mardi Gras time in the New Orleans area? It's usually rather chilly if not darn right cold during that time of year locally.
There's a Cereality (also listed on their web link, given above by chris_vickers2001) here in Tempe, Arizona on the campus of Arizona State University in the student union building. I read about this a couple of years ago in the newspaper, when it first opened, and immediately thought, "Now that's a great idea. They're going to make tons of money." And I *really* wanted to go there to try it out, for the reason mentioned above by a few other folks: getting to try different cereals without having to buy an entire box at the grocery store. And yet in that 2+ years I've never managed to make it down there to try it out, even though I live less than 7 miles away... mostly because on-campus parking is absolutely insane if you don't have a parking sticker, and I'm not a student there so I don't. I vow to try to go there this weekend; the parking is no problem on the weekends, when classes are not in session. I'm glad I came across this thread in the message boards!
I just went to Berkeley, California the other day and they also had a place similar to Flakes. I don't remember the name though. Cereality was featured on a show called Unwrapped on The Food Network.
The cereal bar in Berkeley was called Moolicious, and it was on Telegraph near Channing. I work nearby, so I used to go there for lunch fairly often. Unfortunately, not many people were enthusiastic about the concept, and Moolicious went out of business sometime last year.
there's a great one in whittier, CA (in the shopping area known as 'uptown whittier') called the milky spoon, there may or may not be more locations around...
Juju's closed at the end of last year (unfortunately, this had happened a few days before I took a ladyfriend there as a surprise...it certainly ended up being a surprise to me). But there is a place called "Flake" (no relation to the film) in Venice, CA that serves cereal much like the film (along w/ other breakfast staples), so one can try there.
But your reason --getting to try out a different kind of cereal-- is mindless: You know you'd obviously pay more for one single bowl of cereal in a cafe/restaurant (by the time you add tax, tip, a cup o coffee, whatever)than the whole box would cost you at Trader Joe or Food-For-Less...right?
They used to have a cereal bar every weekend in the late '80s or early '90s at the bar in the basement of St. Andrew's hall, "The Shelter" in Detroit. They would show Ren & Stimpy cartoons.
I've been to a cereal bar where you can choose different elements to make your own cereal but I wanted to own one where you could try cereal from all over the world as well as cereal that may not be available in all areas.
