why did you guys on here lie to me about this game for???

i was on here reading about this game yesterday and there's all these comments saying how much better this game is than fallout 3

so i rush out and buy oblivion, pop it in, and...

crappy graphics, my characters motions especially when crouched are extremely non-fluid (as are the camera angles), the characters in the game all look cheap and the same

so i guess my question is, what the fv(k were you guys talking about?

were you just blatantly lying, or are you some "Magic: The Gathering" nerds who only like games where your character can "cast spells" or what?

Oblivion is a slow burning game,it takes a while to get into it,if you don't have the patience to give it a chance, you probably won't enjoy it.One thing it does not have,is crappy graphics, for a game that's 4 years old,the attention to detail, especially in the outside environments,is beautiful.Fallout 3 is a great game,it is after all basically Oblivion set in a post Apocalyptic landscape, character movement in both is basically the same, even down to the same problems, getting stuck between rocks etc outdoors is an annoyingly common occurrence. The NPC designs are a bit ugly and samey, but you could also say the same is true of Fallout, but there are many more NPC's in Oblivion than there are in Fallout anyway,so I guess that minor transgression can be excused. Both games are also a bit glitchy, but then again, that's a problem common to both.Where Oblivion stand head and shoulders above Fallout,is longevity and variation.Character customisation in Oblivion is massive.Don't like magic?Fair enough, don't specialise your character in it.Be a stealth killer or an all out warrior.Don't like the main storyline?Fair enough, you don't have to do it.I know Fallout is a little like this, but Oblivion is bigger and more engrossing,Fallout kinda gets boring at level 20 when you're all but invincible, with Oblivion you can go so many different ways with character development.VATS is cool in Fallout,an option like that for an archer or stealth character in Oblivion would be cool.So in a nutshell,I've played a lot of both, but I would go back more to Oblivion more often,it has more replay value.Oh and word of advice,if you don't like fantasy based games, don't insult people that do on the basis that you bought something and didn't like it because you read good things about it on a message board dedicated to that game.

i DO really like the game, and i at least plan on playing it through again once i'm finished because i want to be a reptillian

but... one of my major complaints -

it says it's rated M, and the first thing it lists is blood and gore.

i have seen barely little blood and zero gore whatsoever.

reply

I didn't realise it had an M rating, surprised that it would, you are right,it's not very bloody, although the plains of Oblivion are a little gory.Still,it's not like GTA or anything,it's not even a little racy.Rating systems are strange beasts,it's hard to tell what people will find issue with.Glad you're liking the game though, and maybe you can find a mod on-line that'll bloody it up for you.

reply

i'm not certain, but i may have heard one of the NPC's say the F word, and there's SOME blood if you slash someone with a sword near a wall or rock

but there def was no gore

i may have heard wrong, but i think it's rated M simply because there's a PC mod that allows your character to walk around topless

reply

On a side note: The game was originally rated T. They went back and re-rated it M because there are times when you'll find bodies that have been burned/skinned alive and such. But it doesn't have the dismemberment of Fallout 3, so it's not as brutal in that regard.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

Are you playing Oblivion on PC?

Dogme 07 is the Quintessence of cinema

reply

naw, ps3

i've actually changed my mind about this game a lot

i still don't know if i would say it's BETTER than fallout, but it's pretty close

i'm not noticing the graphics as much, it seems they get better as you get farther in the game

the night sky actually looks better in this game than in fallout

and you guys weren't lying about the size of the game, i beat it two or three days ago (including both expansion packs) and i'm still not really having any trouble finding new missions

there are a few things that REALLY p!$$ me off though, such as... on some quests, if you leave before finishing the quest, you have no map marker and unless you can remember where you found the quest, you're probably going to have a hard time running across it again

also, whenever you have a fighting companion that you're supposed to protect and that you can't tell to "wait here", they CONSTANTLY run right the fv(k in front of your sword while you're trying to kill a monster

People who rate a game by its graphics should stay away from roleplaying games.

Thats what shooters are for.

reply

not really.

the most popular shooter, call of duty... doesn't have very advanced graphics if you ask me

reply

Uh, maybe.

I wouldnt know about that.

But shooters are the titles with the best graphics. Simply because shooters are like what, 8 hours gameplay ? A normal roleplaying game has 40 hours gameplay, many have over 100, and Oblivion is vanilla like about 200 hours gameplay.

You ARE too hung up on looks, but if you can get past that, I'd go farther back and get TES3: Morrowind. It's deeper, bigger, and has a more interesting story, IMO. The Elder Scrolls games are not simply action games, there's a deep backstory and huge attention to details from previous games. Comparing it to Fallout is like comparing Lord of the Rings to Robocop.

I guess the meek can inherit the Earth now. It looks like the stupid aren't doing anything with it.

Isn't oblivion just like $20?

Plus, lot of people do think that Oblivion is better than Fallout 3. So they were not lying to you.

What you should of done was rented Oblivion before playing it. Or looked on youtube and checked it out for yourself before spending any money on it.

You have no none to blame but yourself.

I bet the OP got bored during the opening prison/sewer sequence of the game, because that, admittedly, wasn't the most visually pleasing way to start the game. And that opening sequence was pretty long too. So I could imagine some would gave up on the game right then and there. All the games in the Elder Scrolls series start in the prison/sewer including the upcoming Skyrim.

I borrowed Fallout and i do not see what it's all about. I guess i'm too used to casting spells to heal myself instead of buying stimpacks and drinking water that increases my radiation. After spending a good 2-hours on Fallout i was bored. I even explored around like i would in Oblivion but the underground tunnels are just ..dull. I guess i should spend more time on Fallout but I'd rather wait for Skyrim. Which will be 100% superior.
