Anyone notice any homoerotic nuances?

Whats the deal with all those short shorts? And Maurio, very touchy , feely with that kid? This movie blows. Pardon the pun.

So...lemme get this right.... U don't like this movie because of the short shorts ?! =)))))))))))

I think the homoeroticism is more than a nuance--it's blatant. Watch the extras and you'll see the director is most likely queer (I feel sorry for his girlfriend if he isn't). This movie could have been directed by David Decoteau. Short-shorts and guys slapping each other on the ass. I'm queer so it worked for me. Crappy flick thought.

the entire time watching this movie, my friend and i were singing "gaaaaaaaaaay!" in soprano. you could cut the homoeroticism with a butter knife, or even a pointy rock.

th eplot was really cool, but i thought the production was bad (no one i knew in the 80's acted that way), and the "actors" were laughable. we spent most of the time laughing about the acting than any other bit. i had to rewind the part where the fat girl {who also claimed she ran track and field.... what? no, im not seeing track and field here.... unless she was the hurdle} threw up the gang sign and yelled "HIAWATHA!" like it was supposed to be menacing.

And then she made that kind of sad face like "please take me seriously."

OK, at least I wasn't the only one who thought it was blatantly homoerotic. At first I thought nothing of it figuring it was just the times (1981). But after much ass slapping and Mario telling Ruben to look in his eyes when he talks to him, I just started laughing. Like many others here, I thought the plot was really good and somewhat original, but the execution was way off.

let's be honest here. short shorts were in back in the early '80's whether you lie 'em or not so that wasn't anything put in to make it seem gay. that was part of '80's fashion and if you on't believe me watch the first Sleepaway Camp. secondly, this film was produced by a company called Screamkings. they are obviously an outlet to make homoerotically tinged horror flicks on a low budget. personally i enjoyed the film anf liked the concept. it felt original while at the same time it homaged films like Friday The 13th and Sleepaway Camp. plus, the idea that Mario was maybe gay i was cool with because they weren't necesarily clubbing you over the head with some ridiculous gay stereotype like him acting really flamboyant or bitchy. he was just a regular guy like Vade who happened to perhaps have eyes for Ruben, the quiet kid. i thought it was good and i liked that aspect to the movie. too often you see gay characters throw around for comic relief and nothing more, them not ever making them real characters. Mario and Ruben felt real to me and weren't fake gay put-ons so i'm happy with it. i really enjoyed this flick and look forward to future Screamkings movies.

Get over yourselves!. Is it wrong to put some homoerotic content in a horror film or any other film?...geez, learn how to deal with it. In horror movies it's all about straight people having sex all the time. These two guys didn't even do anything, they only hug and make intense eye contact for a while and just because of that, the movie blows?... gimme a break. And about the really short shorts, the problem is not that those shorts are ghey, the problem is that they look tacky, that's all.
One of the things I like about "Camp Daze" is that it probably offended and disgusted a lot of morons who can't deal with a little bit of gayness.

The relationship between Mario and Ruben was very homoerotic, especially the scene with them out on the dock. It went way further then just a guy feeling for another with the "look me in my eyes," the hand holding, and the intense hugging.

reply

And Mario's friend said he was looking at the kid like a lion looks at a gazelle during the cafeteria lunch scene.

I just saw this movie over the weekend and I thought the same thing...as soon as Mario first started looking at the Reuben kid I was like "wait, is this a gay movie?" i could care less, if you wanna have gays in the movie, hell im all for it, but its like they were teasing to the point where i just wanted to be like "would you just let them kiss already!!!"

anyhow as for the movie its self,,,the idea, setting and concept was really cool, i think the camera work was kinda bad...i think with a bigger budget, better research and some revamping, this movie could have made it much bigger! i still liked it though Oh yeah and to what the guy said above about the fat girl throwing up the HIAWATHA gang sign, H Y S T E R I C A L!!)

If you check out the production company's website (www.screamkings.com) youll see that a lot of their movies seem to go with the "all boys homoerotisicm" theme...hmmm

It's more than people's gay issues that make them hate this film...just because they make a post about it doesn't mean there some homophoeb (sp?)...I mean, the first poster even said he was gay, so obviously your homophoeb (sp!?) theory is out the window...

Did I ever said they were all homophobes?...and I'm not sure if the first poster said he was gay actually. I mean:

When did he say he was gay in that post?

I just said that most of the posters above couldn't deal with a little bit of gayness in a horror movie and it's true, I didn't instantly label them as homophobes. If they make a post about it, they obviously have a little problem with it. So yeah...my theory is out the window because I never actually came up with that theory, you just decided to put words in my mouth, that's all. Jesus Christ.

However it's obvious that a lot of the people that had a problem with the movie's gay undertones did because they're homophobic, otherwise it wouldn't have bothered them. It can be so annoying to have to see horror movie after horror movie that show women as sex objects and have the girls in tight clothing and the camera zooming in on their as*es, etc... If gay horror fans have to sit through that then it's only fair they get a little eye candy once in awhile too. Hopefully it will be seen in more mainstream horror movies though for once. I liked how Jeepers Creepers 2 did it, though I'd like to see one with actual male nudity. If guys don't like it then too bad. Their girlfriends have had to sit through many bare breasts and even more in mainstream movies. We need more man-candy.

Hear, hear! I was raised watching horror movies, but I hate having to sit through all the nudity and sex scenes. It always made me uncomfortable to be watching a movie with a boyfriend and have some naked double-D's take up the screen! Now, when my husband and I are watching a movie and a guy's bare butt flashes on screen, he cringes and I laugh. Like with 28 Days Later. The movie rating listed some nudity, and it was the coma dude!

for real, this movie has amazing set-up scenes for porn.

haha, for sure, i totally agree

reply

A tad hypocritical since it's merely a reversal of the tradtional slasher flick habit of objectifying and victimizing sexy teenage girls. Since I was a kid I had to sit through countless horror films with much more blatant T and A and explicit sex. The only one that had any kind of homosexual element in it was Sleepaway Camp, which of course only used it as the thing that caused the serial killer to go nuts. It was kind of nice to see the homoeroticism done more subtly and realistically.

As for the shorts, believe it or not, that's how we dressed in the 80's. Wet, Hot, American Summer was similar in that it took the 80's summer camp comedies and turned them upside down a bit. Whereas normally there is a lot of straight sex, the only sex scene in that movie was between two guys.

I guess it just goes to show how we don't usually see how pervasive something is until it's changed or taken away somehow.

Nuances?

That's like saying that hitting someone with a sledgehammer is a nuanced way of saying hi.

This was one of the gayest things I have seen and I have seen almost every episode of Queer as Folk.

Not a complaint mind you...it is not like the homoeroticism made it a bad movie...(pretty much everything else outside of the overall concept made it a bad movie) But you would have to be pretty blind not to notice it. I actually started to think that Screamkings was some sort of gay film studio, (given the play on Screamqueens) and that this was going to be some sort of political statement, or at the very least an attempt to insert some homosexual themes in a genere that often does not include them...(awkwardly writing in a very religious character, awkwardly writing in an abortion, awkwardly having a play in the middle of it, awkwardly cutting away from any hint of female nudity, yet awkwardly zooming in on the men's bare chests, awkwardly working in a lesbian character.)

Of course this movie was terrible...a few of my favorite parts...Driving INTO Maine on their way to Boston, with no sign of a border patrol...The huge slaughter at the beach that is never shown anywhere else in the movie, yet is revealed at the end...the dream sequence...the fact that certain edits show that the shots were filmed at completely different times of day, despite being in the same scene...the intricate, vulgar, sadistic traps that were set up, BY THE GOOD GUY...the fact that some seemed to remember every little detail about what is happening to them, yet others had no clue...oh I could go on and on...but I won't...

As a gay splatter/gore fan, I appreciate seeing gay characters in this kind of film (or any kind...) They don't need a "reason" to be gay, just like in real life, people just are, and it just added something to the story for me. Nice to have our existence acknowledged in a genre i enjoy so much, and have our p.o.v. part of the whole picture.

reply

Maybe nuance isn't the right word, but it wasn't so blatant that homosexuality became an "issue" like it would be in a TV movie or after school special. It was just a given, and didn't draw too much attention to itself. Obviously many people weren't exactly sure what to make of it since they're used to homosexuality being presented so heavy-handedly.

reply

Yes, this movie had a lot of gay/homoerotic nuances.

one thing was that certain characters appeared and then disappeared, such as Patrick (who wore half shirts through the movie), who was there are the beginning and looked like a major character and then they seem to have cut scenes of him out.
