WTF Did I Just See? -- SPOILERS

I don't usually come on boards to pan movies, but I'm making an exception for this movie so others won't waste time on it. I rented it because I like James Franco, and I'm catching up on his body of work.

This is a complete misfire. It's a dark rom-com fantasy that I think (?) tries to straddle a dark Coen brothers-esque plot with romantic fantasy. But instead of really committing to the truly macabre aspects of the plot and going for black comedy, it veers off into light rom-com fantasy territory and treats all the macabre stuff as though it's just a hurdle on the way to finding true love. The fact that the principals have to die to achieve romantic fulfillment is treated like a fairytale ending. The whole thing is downright bizarre.

The performances aren't bad--you can almost see in Miller's and Franco's performances what the movie could have been, and David Carradine gives a touching, poignant performance. The problem I think is the script and the director, who just have no idea how to pull off this kind of thing.
