What ERA is this set in?

My boyfriend reckons its set in the 60's but I think it's modern day..... Any thoughts from you viewers out there? Cheers. Insecktorb.

After seeing it today, I reckon that it's Modern times because the black people were not segregated from the white people. Notice how Laz goes into the clothing store and shopping center? I also forgot to mention, there was one lady in the movie who's niece(or was it grandaughter) had bought her some boots which she had got them on the computer" So the era is obviously not the '60's.

It would be so nice if something would make sense for a change.

Thanks for backing me up on this one ;-) I didn't question it for a moment.........

Now just tell me what Era "A Time to Kill" was from. its a very similiar movie but with much more famous lines.

Never heard of it ):

A Time To Kill was set in modern times due to the late model Saab that Matthew's character drives.

reply

The novel was set in the 1960s but the movie set it in the present which is not realistic. It woulda been realistic in the 60s but not in the 1990s.

INCEPTION IS THE BEST MOVIE OF 2010!!!!!

Did you neglect to notice Justin Timberlake's uniform in the beginning of the film? That uniform is pre-September 11th. People in the army now wear different uniforms. And he was going to ship out, therefore he was supposed to be deployed (but was sent home due to extreme anxiety) he would have been in the Bosnian deployment era which means this movie was in the mid-90's. Not present time.

Dumbasses.

reply

Actually, the uniform that Timerberlake's character is wearing in the movie is not pre-2001. The uniform he's wearing is the Battle Dress Uniform (green/brown/khaki "classic" camouflage) which was the standard fatigue worn in the US Army until 2005 when it was replaced with the current Army Combat Uniform (tan/gray/green "digital" camouflage).

In fact, it was the Afghan and Iraq Wars and the colors and nature of their desert/mountain/urban battlefields that brought about the need for the ACU in the first place. So saying the uniform existed before those wars happened doesn't even make sense.

Though, even if you had been right about the uniform being pre-2001, it hardly would prove that the movie must have taken place before 2001 considering that the depiction of military uniforms in movies are frequently inaccurate in one form or another. Furthermore, there are many items featured throughout the movie -- e.g. civilian clothes, vehicles, dialog -- that are clearly of 21st century origin and thus all but ruling out a setting of mid-1990s for this movie.

reply

It's "an idiot", not "a idiot", you moron.

Please don't impregnate anyone with your little moron babies.

You were able to point out an obvious typo on an internet forum. Thank you for your contribution to humanity. What would the world do without you, Stixey.

As somebody pointed out, there were min-80s vehicles around. Ronnie was wearing Woodland Camo BDUs. She mentioned her niece getting her boots "on the computer". I'd say right around 1990-95; there weren't any compact cell phones in evidence, so it couldn't have been too much later than that.

You know what inspiration is? The momentary cessation of stupidity.

The very first online shopping was in 1994 (actually it was Pizza Hut if my memory serves me well) and for the outlands to actually use online purchasing one can assume quite a few years must have passed, so I think 90-95 is pushing it :-)

IMO present time is accurate enough and supports the story fully. But 60'iesit sure ain't .

reply

It's definitely modern times. Both by Ronnie's uniform and the fact that there was at least one scene with the Reverend talking on a cell phone (or possibly cordless phone).

Also, they didn't have digital watches like, you know, one of the primary theme elements in this movie in the 60's.

You could drive just a few miles from where I live right now and see towns just like the movie, characters and all.

reply

the setting is the south so it looks like the 60's

reply

I'd say mid to late '90s.

- The Uniform as mentioned by others is pre-2005. Also every deployment I've seen for Afghanistan or Iraq was in desert camo, not woodlands.
- Internet shopping exists, but the way it's talked about makes it feel like it's still a novelty.
- We don't see anyone using a cellphone, in the mid-1990s only a few people had them.

This film was set during The American Civil War circa 1864/5 i'd say based on the surroundings.

It's set in modern times but also the south and the fact is as someone who has lived in the south the way the film portrays it is not that far off. Rae reminded of about 4 girls I knew in my life and Lazarus is like a number of musicians I've known.
