It was probably because she was such a heavy smoker. The combination of the cough syrup and not smoking nearly as much is probably what made it go away.

It's completely feasible that a young person can fight an infection with strong cough suppressant and lots of bedrest alone. Her fever broke which means immune system went back to normal once it sorted out the underlying problem. This is how people survived without antibiotics for thousands of years, they treated the symptoms, rested and let the immune system do it's job.
