What the hell....

I recently purchased this game and I was expecting a whole lot better. I bought THUG and thought the best idea would be to skip to the latest and "greatest" THAW. This game's plot was stupid, the dialogue was stupid, the gameplay was more unrealistic, therefor stupid. When I bought THPS1, yeah it was unrealistic but the tricks i saw you said "i could see that happening..." with 50% of the tricks you could do, about 80% of the tricks in this game are not possible. I hate that they left out little but pleasing details and added little and stupid details. When I started I wanted to create my skater, not choose one of 4 skaters and change their clothes. I wanted to make him short, fat, bald, chinese, black, white, whatever. Instead you gotta choose one of 4 guys to start your little adventure with. Your board does not get scratched when it's used, that's one thing I liked about THUG, it made you feel you were more into the game and it was a cool, realistic detail. So in THAW they took that out, and a few others including the character creation, blah blah blah and they added AWESOME things like backflips! what...the..hell... why the hell would i want to be able to do a backflip and frontflip when I jump? It's Tony Hawks Pro Skater, not Tony Hawks Gold Medal Gymnist. So I feel they replaced some cool things that had to do with skating from THUG with dumb things that had nothing to do with it and to make your adventure less enjoyable.

Ok, the whole game is based in LA and you have to build a skatepark using junk around the city wich makes it an ugly, boring, disorganized skatepark. The levels in the game really blew, they were all way too small and there wasn't anything to do with em. Almost the whole game just plain sucked. Your friends were all a bunch of wannabe rebellious kids (isn't it funny how when kids "don't care" how they look they all end up looking the same? strange..)and it was just stupid. The whole thing, not getting sponsored, being a soul skater, not using skating for money, that's crap. If you have a talent and can make a living off of it than do so. Plus they were saying how "bad" it was to do that and yet the game is called TONY HAWKS pro skater, wich means they made it based on tony hawk and he gets a fat check for it, so that's a ridiculous mini-plot to the game. If it weren't for just skating around that vans park in the game i would give it a crap score

reply

um.. i remember being able to back flips in all the games. Maybe not 1. What tricks weren't possible? They are all based on tricks that people actually do. Watch the vids.

Well backflips were a special, not just the average skater can do a double backflip, and i should rephrase that, 80% of the COMBOS are impossible. Thrasher Skate and Destroy was the most realistic skaring game, you couldn't ollie 7 feet high, do triple blackflips to manual and impossible specials, it's a fun game, no doubt, but i'm sick of how incredibly unrealistic it is. Plus the whole plot sucked, THUG was awesome, this whole "don't skate for money (but buy tony hawks products and everything we advertise on here)" is really lame, if you have a skill and can feed your family with that skill, then go friggin do it, skating's still gonna be fun. Alot of things are just dumb, the little punk fashion thing was also stupid, everyone had mohawks and stupid hair, such friggin wannabe's, real people don't give a crap what they look like, those kinds of people obviously do because they spend so much time and effort buying ripped clothes, hair dye, black clothes, patches, and everything. I hate that style, it needs to die, and not brought into a THPS game

reply

Yeah the clothes in the game were pretty bad. I didn't really pay attention to it though. I really only like playing these games for goals. I cant say I really paid attention to the story at all. I just rode around looking for the next mission. Thats why I started playing THPS 1 and 2. No story, just points and grabbing things.

reply

Yeah, i'm sort of the same way, every time i played it i try not to pay attention but it bothers me every time, it's so irritating, i wanna throw a brick at everyone who dresses and acts like that, soul skating is such crap, most of the people who said they were soul skaters are too old and lack the skill to be sponsored (at least where i live in northern california). I mean, come on, tony hawk is selling merchandise and at the same time his game is saying don't do what he's doing on the covor of the game, haha, and look at all the jeep advertisements, it's all money money money and they try to cover it up with idiotic looking characters and stupid plots and dialogue, it's so pathetic...the next one better not be so stupid, this game was easily NOT WORTH $50, hardly worth $20 wich is what i paid

reply

Yeah, I am glad I only paid $20 too. One thing I did like is I thought it was easier to find the missions than the other games. I don't know a lot of people around here that dress and act like that. They really are the reason I don't go down to burnside anymore. They all congregate to the same area, so they are very easily avoidable. I don't like anybody that says don't make money for doing something you enjoy.

i paid $40 for it, and very unpleased with my purchase.

I can see why, i can't get over the fact of the NADAS SPIN! that was SOOOOO IDIOTIC! that is the stupidest trick i've EVER head of or seen! I hate how they went all out impossible with this game like that one mission "I want you to do a spine transfer off that roof to a double backflip all the way down" what the hell? or this one "I want yu to wall run and do a back tuck onto the pole and a nadas spin" and much much more, this game is so fake it really disappointed me, if they do the cliche skater style and ridiculously impossible tricks and combo's i'm not gonna support it in any way, and they better have a story like THUG1, skater from the bottom makes it to the top, that was great...until the end where they were all about soul skating, that was the only dumb part. But if they made the next one that way and kicked the idea of soul skating because it's insane hypocracy because tony hawks face is on the covor of the game and they advertize jeep like crazy that just means money money money and the game story is all against money making with your skills...pff ok next! and don't make it retarded this time

reply

um, am i in videogame nerd town or something? who really cares? it's an entertaining game.

American Wasteland was a great game for the people that do not go out skating everyday. After 6 games you have to understand Activision are no longer making the game just for skaters. They are making it for everyone, and from what i see, everyone is buying the game.

People who don't skate won't give a crap about how unrealistic the tricks are. Infact, they will be more impressed by them. THPS1 got me into skating. Before that it wasn't something i watched or did. Now i love it.

Just to show THAW's wide popularity, i have just lent the game to my friend who never watches or skates, yet he loves playing THAW.

If you arnt impressed by the game, that is your opinion, but there are loads of people out there that are impressed and cant wait for the next installment.

I am not saying the game is perfect but it is still enjoyable.

And how do you expect Activision to make a game without sponsors? Most games now have major sponsors, look at any EA game.

reply

I've been a fan of the entire series from the start, and I've seen how many changes there have been since THPS1 and THAW. It's amazing. The graphics have dramatically improved, the storyline concept has gotten better and better, and traicks have gotten better, everything has improved! The only complaint I have in the series is that they don't seem to have many pro skaters in the games as much as they did anymore. But other than that, I LOVE these games!!

reply

dude im only gonna say this once GET THE FU*K OVER IT! its just a game god dam it. and sk8in is wat u make of it so if u gonna diss a sk8 game (even if it is unrealistic as hell) get ur stupid a$$ out there and do it.

The story is supposed to be cheesy. It's like an 80's styled game. I mean look at the soundtrack. Old School Punk songs covered by new school Emo/Indie bands. I was pleasantly surprised that they also included some actual "real" 80's punk and rock/new wave stuff too.

But back to the story... it's very similar in tone to classic films like Breakin 2, and Thrashin.

Oh and I think that skaters have been using the term "SK8" since the early/mid 80's (I mean I'm 29, and I can remember it being used when I was like 10)
