Break through cliches

What I really, really liked was, that for once on a TV Show it wasn't the Dad being against gays and being super "religious" but the Mom. Usually, Moms are portrayed as the more open-minded ones, but here its the other way around: Really liked that twist.

Well most of the time the Dad is the one shown as being closed minded when it's a gay son and it's been my experience that even guys who think of themselves as "liberal" and not at all homophobic have trouble accepting that their son is gay. They seem to think you're not a "real man" if you're gay and that they did something to make their son that way, that they weren't a good example or such BS.

I can't really remember having seen any show with lesbian teenagers where they were showing the parents reaction as anything but totally accepting so I can't really say if it's a cliché or not.

Anyway, it's pretty sad when parents can't accept their children for who they are.

It's hard to apply the concept of the cliché to South of Nowhere, since it is the first tv series for teens featuring a gay couple as the centrality of the series.
