Started strong but jumped the ship.

Killing off Clay was a bad choice. That's why Sean had to go as well.

Glen's character wasn't totally needed after awhile. Spencer and Clay's stories ran the show more. Also the siblings started out close and then grew a part way too fast. They should have been there for each other more. We could see they loved each other but they needed more bonding moments.

I think Spencer and Ashley were a forced couple. They worked better as friends. They paralleled Sean and Clay. Sean taught Clay to be black, and Ashley taught Spencer how to deal with her sexuality. It was two friendships. Ashley couldn't always be teaching someone. Ashley needed Spencer as a friend, to be there when she missed her Dad. As for dating she needed someone more on her level. I think Spencer was more in love with Ashley anyways. Ashley was less into it.

Spoilers:
They got together, but their story line was all over the place.

Season 3 was terrible by comparison with the first two, but not for the reasons you mentioned. Spencer and Glen did grow apart, but truth be told, they were never that close to begin with. Glen was actually antagonistic towards Spencer for a lot of the series. It would have been nice if Clay's death would have brought them closer together, but it was not a huge loss, story-wise. None of this is a major issue, however.

Where I staunchly disagree with you is saying that Spencer and Ashely work better as friends. Spencer and Ashley were never friends. They were always attracted to each other. The centrality of South of Nowhere is the struggle for recognition between Ashley and Spencer. Their love is the show. The first season revolved around Spencer coming to terms with being gay, and season two revolved around their newfound love struggling with the family. What made the show great was the conflict, first within Spencer and then with the family. What sunk S3 was that there was no meaningful conflict.

Ashley and Spencer's reunion in S3 was not forced, but there was nothing meaningful about it.

They had chemistry and wanted to be couple.

Doing 1 thing telling others not to do it is reality for a hypocrite. Hypocrite to me spells c u n t

Ehhh. I didn't really like Clay and as others mentioned, he wanted to leave the show anyway. I thought Glen was needed only because Chelsea, I think that was her name, needed some type of connection to the show after Clay died. It would've been an interesting dynamic if the show continued since she essentially began to date the uncle of her child.
For me, I never thought Ashley and Spencer were a good couple because of how forced it seemed and how Spencer and Ashley's communication styles clashed too much.

A bit of the old ultraviolence...

Killing off Clay was a bad choice.

I agree! It just seemed kinda forced and was little over the top. Why couldn't they just have him move away or something? Did they have to kill him off? They even did a lousy job with that because the season premiere basically began with everyone at the hospital checking on their loved ones and Paula comes out and gives the bad news. And then next thing you know, it skips to three months later. They could've at least shown a funeral for Clay and shown his biological mother there with the Carlins. If you're gonna kill someone off, at least do it right. And then having Chelsea lose the baby was just too much. I couldn't even watch it anymore after that. And was never really all that relevant. It's like he was there just to be an annoying brother and son(which he was). everything just went downhill this season.

The first season was good!! The second season started off pretty bad to me. I didn't like the whole Ashley has a long list sister story. And the way she was introduce was lame. However I did like the storyline when Chelsea became pregnant after one night with Clay. Very unexpected!! And season 3 was a big mess!! Clay should've been convinced to stay, because the storyline with the baby, him, and Chelsea would have been entertaining!!

"Sean taught Clay to be black"

Wait, what happened here? I haven't seen this show in literally a decade and don't remember this part.

reply

Sean didn't necessarily taught Clay to be 'black', but rather he was a positive influence for Clay on black culture, since he grew up in a white family in the mid west.

Just finished binge watching the series. Overall, it was a decent show with poor actors. Beside the parents (guess because they're adults), and Chelsea everyone else acting was over the top.

Season 1 was the best

Season 2 was okay, but the focus on Aiden was boring beyond compare. No wonder the show was cancelled but given the opportunity to end

The whole supposed love triangle between Ashley, Aiden and Spencer was forced and didn't truly exist. He was okay with them being a couple but all of a sudden he's harbored feelings surface. At least it kept him from sleeping with Kyla in 2.

Season 3 was the worst....I hated Kyla from the beginning and all the focus she got here just turned my stomach

It would've been nice if the writers brought back Ashley's Mom for some kind of reconciliation instead of bringing Carmen back, for what reason I'm yet to understand.

The only thing I truly loved about season 3 was Glen and Chelsea's romance. I appreciated it and it was well played by the actors. Plus, their kisses were the best in the series. I like Ashley & Spencer as a couple, but their chemistry did not make me ache for them as a couple (not like Karmy - Faking it).
