why do people hate this movie

i thought that the movie was good. so why do people hate it so much, what is wrong with it?

reply

The movie is good, in fact it is very good. It mainly the critics who said this movie is terrible but after the success of it, the reviews are getting better. It goes to show that those critics views don’t necessarily reflect the opinions of the masses, which is what counts at the end of the day. They know that, so that’s why good reviews of the movie is all of a sudden appearing now.

reply

its people who cant get over the old one.ill admit it if there was another don made after this one then i really probably wouldnt like it,i kno thats not very gd.

reply

main reason is because people are comparing it to the old one. they shouldnt because that was years ago and this is now so ofcourse its a little different. not to mention that this movie is a tribute and not a REMAKE. big difference!!

Hate is too strong a term but I certainly didn't enjoy watching this movie. I was expecting a Farhan Akhtar movie since I am a fan of Farhan Akhtar style of film-making. I have loved his Lakshya, liked his Dil Chahta hai. His style of story-telling, though usually slow-paced is uniquely stylised and well scripted. This time around he was a let-down. With his characters, story-telling, innovations, music, cinematography, etc he didn't live up to what he is capable of. All these things contributed to what I perceive as a boring movie. I understand that fans here have a different opinion and there are people who simply loved this movie.

IMO Don was actually more of an entertainer than DCH, which I did like quite a lot. Lakshya theme seemed silly to me so I've stayed away (plus Hritik is a put off for me) - so no comment on that film. The innovations in action and cinematography were quite an advance from DCH and I loved the sarcasm filled dialog in the film and how it was delivered.

reply

I guess I agree to what Jay said. For me it was a let down not because i like the older version, but because i expected Farhan Akhtar to do better than this. Some of the scenes in the movie come off as really cheesy and too cliched. What happened to the DCH charm?

reply

"Dil Chahta Hai" was a gem.

I guess i haven't seen more powerful and more controversial character than the one played by Akshay Khanna.

And yes, "Hum Hain Naye, Andaaz Kyon Ho Puraana" still rocks. I threw it on the dance floor a couple of times, and the crowd turned quite wild.

reply

I am a huge SRK fan but in all fairness......I liked DCH better than don......da only reason I resisted the temptation to walk out of don within the first 45 mins was becoz it was SRK's movies.....but kinda glad I stayed...well sorta....becoz the movie was kinda ok after dat....abt the twist.....well I kinda guessed it (and know I didn't know anything abt the movie b4hand...I watched the first day first show in my country)

reply

LOL. Actually i suspected the twist when i saw both the Don's in almost identical Hospital beds - Kinda figured that director is upto something here.

Don (2006) cannot compare to Dil Chahta Hai. That movie was like a breeze of fresh air. This Don is average at best.

reply

"Don (2006) cannot compare to Dil Chahta Hai. That movie was like a breeze of fresh air. This Don is average at best."

Amen to that.

reply

Don was better than DCH. One of the best since Lagaan. Majority of the people hate this movie b/c they hate SRK. You take SRK out and put in Ajay or someone else, they would like it. But its b/c of SRK the movie made so much money, otherwise "hit hona mushkil hi nahi naa mumkin tha".

reply

true i agree with badshah its bcuz of srk people are hating. if it was akshay in don people would be praising it like no other. just bcuz srk gets best roles people hate him.

reply

I think the thing you are all forgetting is the type of film it is. Farhan Akhtar is a director opening himself upto a whole new type of film and you wonder why the shot, pacing and approach is so different? And, because its different you did not like it and therefore he failed. Give me a break.

Let me give you an example of a famous american director that moves between genres and got early crap for it: Spielberg did Jaws, Close encounters, and Et which all have simular approches to film shots and pacing. Then he did films such as the color purple with very different shot choices and pacing. I could make arguements why color purple is better than the others but I won't (I like all of them too much). But the point is, Spielburg never got respect for dramatic films (purple, amistad, empire of the su) until Schindler's List because people were to in love with his non-dramatic films. My point is that the good directors adjust for the type of project and not force there signature on it. If you only want to see dramatic/personal pieces than don't go to the other projects, and vice versa. But remember it is one of the marks of a good director to challange himself and one such way is to take on new film types.

p.s. I am not saying Farhan Akhtar is the next Spielberg its just an example.

reply

There's a feeling that fans of old Don don't like the movie, but that's not true completely. I know many people who don't like both Dons. And I wonder why? A mindless film like Dhoom 2 has become a blockbuster and most of the people don't like Don...even without watching it.

It's too subtle and classy to be liked by everyone.

reply

<It's too subtle and classy to be liked by everyone.>

Sad but true - no romance, no practically unclothed ladies, no brainless stunts, a story that you have to engange your brain to get into, and most of all a very unconventional ending.. this was NOT a film for the masses. I am surprised it did as well as it did.

reply

Right. It did too well for a classy film. The main reason for high box office collections was Shahrukh Khan's star power. Otherwise a great film like this would have gone wasted completely. I was enthralled to see no serious romance for the main focus was on the storyline.

******SPOILERS AHEAD******

I am surprised why people have taken the clues for the climax twist as plot holes. The director has given very subtle hints in the narrative. I can't wait to watch the movie again to catch more clues.

reply

You are right - too subtle and classy to be liked by everyone. But perhaps this is Farhan's fate, even DCH and Lakshya were flops, this one at least made it into the hit column.

reply

Too many hints and not subtle at all. I found out the twist before the intermission. It's a boring movie, full of clichés and plot holes.

*************HUGE SPOILER*************

Why did (false) Vijay give the CD to (false) De Silva if De Silva didn't know that the CD existed and Vijay didn't have to do it (because he's not the real Vijay)? The CD is the most absurd motive I've seen in years. There was something like that in the old movie?

************END OF THE SPOILER**********

Anyway, I can't stand SRK. It's a pity because I liked very much the rest of the cast. I don't hate the movie. Simply I didn't enjoy it.

reply

LOL! I cannot believe the CD is being discussed again. Go to the spoilers thread and read all about all the theories. In the old version there was red diary that being tossed around as people jumped on a trampoline in a graveyard. And JJ was tightrope walking/limping between two very tall buildings with two kids (yes he had two) on his shoulders as the bad guys SAWED on the rope. Also read on that thread how other detractors said there were no hints or too few hints and Farhan just made up a twist at the end - so he cannot win either way. Why see the movie if you cannot stand SRK? There was no other cast of note or doing anything in the movie, it was his movie.

reply

Why see the movie if you cannot stand SRK?

Good question ^__^ I guess I like Bollywood and SRK is in a lot of movies so that is the price I've to pay. I liked some SRK's movies. He's OK in Main Hoon Na (he overacts a lot, so he works in comedies) and bearable in Asoka or Paheli. I definitely hate him in dramas like Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zaara or Kabi Alvida Naa Khena.
About the rest of the cast... I like Arjun Rampal very much (I find him very hot) and Boman Irani is a competent actor. I don't disliked Priyanka Chopra, she's not Rani or Preity but she's quite funny and lovely. In my opinion only SRK is spare!

reply

If you like Arjun Ramphal over SRK then what can one say! I guess one can just laugh at the likes of him who cannot act for nuts and only survive on looks. There are over one hunderd Hindid movies released a year and SRK is in one or two at most, some years in none. Do not pay the price - try and find Arjun Ramphal or John Abraham movies to watch. If there was any spare with no role and no acting in Don it was Mr. Ramphal.

reply

I totally agree with you SRani that this was Shahrukhs movie. And it's quite silly to see it if you hate him... (But of course we all know that the first people to see any SRK film are his biggest fans AND his biggest haters... :) And it's quite easy to avoid watching SRK films and still get to see plenty of hindi movies.

reply

LOL! But m,aybe he/she watched it to see Arjun finally act when he was in the coffin? A rare moment indeed!

reply

I dont hate it. I think it works great as a comedy (albeit an unintentional one). SRK trying to be a bad-ass is always hilarious.

reply

Your comment was hilarious.

reply

LOL - I hope you mean taimur and not me. Yes I too thought his comment was hilarious. mayebe if he goes and sees the movie a few more times he will understand it. Or maybe he just came off seeing Dhoom 2 and now the whole world is colored grey for ever!

reply

A blockbuster may not necessarily be a great film and vice versa. If people choose films only on box office stats, then I am glad Don is not like Dhoom 2 or Fanaa. In any case, Don is a hit and it doesn't have to compete with Dhoom 2 or any film to establish its credibility.

reply

And I am very relieved to note that Don did better than Dhoom 2 overseas.
http://www.boxofficeindia.com/overseas.htm

Outside India we do not have to go to the movies to ogle girls in skimpy clothes or watch people kiss.

reply

lol.
And they don't pretend to be hip and cool.

reply

I just watched the Star Screen Awards and Don was not nominated for Best film and Vivah was neither did Shahrukh Khan win any awards for Don. I think the main reason is that people are too attached to the original Don.

reply

[deleted]

obvviously because they automatically assume that SRK can't hold a candle to Amitabh and hold a grudge to it. I have seen both versions, and must say that the new once was MUCH more exciting and fun than the old one.

reply

Okay, people, don't kill me now (especially lovers of the old don), but that movie SUCKED!! (the old don I mean, I loved the new one). I bought (sadly) the old don to see what the hoopla was about, you know, what exactly it is about the old Don that makes people trash the new one...the answer...NOTHING!! It's stupid, how much info can you fit onto a piece of paper suck inside the heel of your shoe? JJ was loud and very annoying in his tights and tight rope, Roma's ass kickery was a joke, in fact the action in this movie was a joke. I'll give it one thing though, Big B as Vijay rocked, I actually prefer SRK as Don and Big B as Vijay.
The music was also quite nice in the old one, but could someone PLEASE tell me why Don is wearing a Tiger mask in Main hoon Don? Very hard to take a supposedly hardcore gangster seriously if he's prancing around in a tiget mask, or any mask for that matter.

Quite honestly, I laughed through it, it was ridiculous and funny (not intentionally). Calling it a classic is really pushing it a bit. Yes, maybe it was breakthrough cinema in it's hayday, but I've seen better movies from earlier times...Big B looked good at 30 though LOL.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous

reply

people can be simply jealous including you.

reply

I agree, ellen the reason the effects of the old don are laughable is because it was made like what 3 decades ago. First of all amitabh was excellent in the old movie a proper don what kind of don watches tom and jerry???

Sorry but i hate the new don especially the ending... for me amitabh was is and will always be the real don and vijay not SRK despite how gr8 an actor he is .

reply

Don watching Tom and Jerry is less ridiculous than him wearing a tiger mask!! That was a LOL moment. Tom and Jerry is classic and people of all ages watch it - gives the character a complexity that we are not expecting. Old Don was laughable not just because it was made 3 decades ago - the tiger mask had nothing to do with the 70s, the tightrope walking while the rope was being sawed, learning to become a mafia boss in a short time.. these were all serious story problems.

Ellen - I have maintained that Big B was the best part of old Don and as Vijay - while SRK was the best part of the new Don and as Don. It is interesting that those were the characters that "survived" in the two films, but while Vijay had to act as Don in the old, it was Don acting as Don in the new and that made the better played character come to the fore in the new.. The best part of old Don is the nostalgia factor. If you watch the two movies now - then you can only laugh at the old one and it not just the technical aspects but the fact that it is almost a spoof.

reply

One thing Shahrukh (and I think others also) has said in interviews was that one reason for making the new Don was to bring this great story to new generation that maybe hadn't seen the old Don. At the same time they wanted to make it relevant in todays world. And they did that. I understand the nostalgy factor with elder viewers and Amitabh fans and I want to respect that, but c'mon, the world was different in 1978 than in 2006.

I never saw the old Don and I'm not so interested in seeing it. I love the new Don, I think it's a great film and I think Shahrukh was great as Don. He along with Farhan Akhtar and others brought to me this great story and I'm glad to have seen it. To me the alternative was never new Don vs. old Don, it was new Don or no Don. I believe I'm not the only one.

Jealous of what?
I'm voicing an opinion. You do not have to agree with anything I say, or think, that's the beauty of free will. You liked the old Don and think it's a classic...well, I'm happy for you. See, I don't, and it has nothing to do with jealousy, but everything to do with what I thought when I watched the movie, which was...it's a stupid movie, I don't see what the hoopla is all about.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous

reply

LOL! I don't think she means you!

reply

I love both versions of Don. I don't suppose people dislike new Don because of their nostalgia for old Don. On the contrary, the peppy and trendy audiences of India cannot like something that has a stamp of an old film to it.

Furthermore, lack of romance and emotions is a strong reason why people dislike it.

Quite frankly, I don't care why certain people don't like Don, for I don't base my liking on public opinion and box office. In any case, it's a big hit, so the jealous and impressionable detractors can sleep with fish.

reply

I think it is a great film that fortunately for its makers became a hit. It had no masala factor in it. As for reasons to dislike it, the unconventional ending (who was shown to win out) was also a downer for many. I loved it all the more for this reason.

I do think people dislike the new if they were HUGE fans of the old - big B for them is irreplaceable! Nothing about the new can be good enough. "It is body beautiful lacking soul" wtf (pardon my language) is that supposed to mean?
