Fantastic acting!

Accidentally dropped in on a re-run of episode 1 on a small secondary channel in my country, and it took me just a minute to get completely hooked. I love the backdrop of World War 2, and how it evolves to a space race between two fascinating pioneers. But most of all I loved the actors playing both von Braun and Korolyov. They both have the stuff of great stars. The type of actors that Hollywood had in a plenty in the 70s, 80s and 90s, but very few today. I really hope they will be discovered. I want to see more of them. By the way, this documentary was a nice follow up on the interest I already had in the space race, sparked by the film October Sky.

I usually don't like the idea of turning documentaries/scientific facts into a play! point

This is often a reason to make the acting feel better than it is. It might not be bad. But I prefer real heads talking about real facts.
They should better make a movie if they want good acting.

I get your point, but then again, even pure documentaries can be quite shallow, and you usually don't learn too much from them. If I really want to delve in to a subject I would rather read a book about it. A docudrama is an easy, low budget way to convey some facts and make it exciting.

Btw, since I wrote my first comment I did indeed read a book about the space race: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Moon-Rising-Sputnik-Rivalries/dp/080508147X

Highly recommended for anyone who found the story told in this docudrama interesting.
