I think that a lot of people who posted on this topic hit the nail on the head. But there IS one thing that everyone seemed to miss. Money is probably the number one factor in the sex trafficking business. As Mira Sorvino's character said in the movie, you can sell a carpet, or a piece of clothing once, for a fixed price. But a person? you can sell them over, and over, and over, and over and over, and over again, each time for a different price. You can sell them for days, weeks, years and make almost an infinite amount of money off of them so long as they are not "worn out". And once they are, you simply "dispose" of them, and choose amongst the long line of the poor, unedcuated and the young who are most likely to become victims of this particular type of crime. Do not be fooled into thinking that this type of crime only occurs in other countries, and the women are eventually brought to the United States and forced into sex slavery here. Women here are at a lower chance of being victims, but they are still at risk, and as a young woman this scares the hell out of me.
Most people, could never imagine selling or buying another human being. Collectively there is a revulsion to this type of behavior. Unfortunately there are many out there who are willing to pay top dollar for this kind of service, and where there is a demand you can bet your life there will be criminals of every shape and size willing to meet that demand whatever the cost to human life and dignity. Coupled with the desire for money is a hatred and overall disrespect for women, and for the mutual lack of respect of other human beings period. Also remember, that this industry feeds on pedophilia and their need to be with children. This is one of the few outlets where a child abuser can have his pick of the litter, as sickening as it sounds.
Drugs do play a role, but by far, most who are the movers and shakers in sex trafficking are not "crazy". Crazy people may have the thoughts to engage in this type of behavior, but you have to be of sound mind to carry it out on the scale as was depicted in the movie. We like to denote things that are hard for us to understand as crazy. But it would be too easy to describe these sick bastards as just having something wrong with their minds. Every trafficker in this movie, was of sound mind, and their real life counterparts should be prosecuted within the fullest extent of the law. First, we have to realize that there is a problem, and work as hard as we can to stop it. I hope one day more people will be strong enough to do so.
